David Taro spends most of his life in a box room in South London either doing his day job in publishing (boo!) or writing and producing music (yay!). #indie #pop #rock & #blues. Influences: the Beatles, Randy Newman, blues (various), Tom Waits, Elton John, Billy Joel, Paul Simon, The Band, Aimee Mann that kind of thing.

And, for anyone who’s interested, here’s a rundown of the current contents of the aforementioned box room in South London:

Interface: UAD Apollo Twin X

DAW: Logic Pro

Mics: Warm Audio WA-47; Shure SM7B, SM57 and SM58

Guitars: Gibson SG ’61 reissue and J45; Fender Japan Tele ’62 reissue and American Pro II P-bass; Gretsch electromatic lap steel; Cordoba C7 classical; Strymon Iridium amp sim and a load of other fun pedals

VSTs and plugins: Mainly UAD stuff; Ozone for mastering; Toontrack Superior Drummer 3*. But genuinely too many to mention (I have a problem)

*This is the only part of my recordings that I don’t technically ‘play’, everything else is 100% me.

Another year my friend. Thank you. I am riding the last wave and looking forward to the next ride. 🎶

@hanley

Well I'm chuffed that you would consider I can play a moog synth properly! Definitely not usually an analog synth kinda guy, I actually only just acquired the moog (Grandmother) in the last week of FAWM, hence a flurry of exploration in my last three songs! Thanks for the listens and kind words 🙌

[avatar]
@cts

Yes, please...and thank you! Meaning I would like a download for SATG.

[avatar]
@cts

That would be your catalogue for FAWM 25, brochacho!

[avatar]
@cts

Hi...I'm gonna make this super easy (or very annoying, but it changes NOTHING). I want it all. I mean it. I'm willing to pay, if necessary.

[avatar]
@nadine

Wow you sound busy busy! Good luck with Spintunes! We could talk about production stuff in April. It's not urgent, I also have to take a little break.

[avatar]

I'm just glad to partake. It was a great Fawm.

[avatar]
@sbs

Back at you! 😀

[avatar]
@bijou

Thank you for your nice comment! Congratulations on your FAWM win and hope you had fun this year!

[avatar]

Thanks as always for your comments this year. Really super encouraging. Let's face it when you're pumping something new out every day there little or no quality control involved is there, and it's great to get that wee bump to keep you going. Now comes the hard job of what to release. And catch up on the rest of my listening that I've not quite got around to yet. On which subject... congrats on your vastly varied month. I've massively enjoyed each new delight. It's been a proper selection box from you this year. So good!

[avatar]

Thanks for your thoughts about For The Win! Always great to hear your feedback. As for Joe Bonamassa, I'd report back on his tone, but I'm not sure which tone to report on. I recall seeing at least six different guitars and he probably played more. I think I counted 15 amps. In any case, he sounded great and his band was excellent. Thanks for all the great comments. Looking forward to seeing you next FAWM!

[avatar]

awesomesauce! let me know when your time allows. btw..whats spintunes?

[avatar]
@alissimon

Thank you for your thoughts on undo/become- really means a lot! And congratulations on this years tracks, unfortunately no the witch laugh is a guitar sample but I hope one day to be able to make those sounds 😂

[avatar]

Thanks David! Congratulations to you too. FAWM's a huge place these days, so I'm glad to have you on my radar thanks to your collabs with two of my favourite fawmers.

[avatar]

I know! What an amazing songwriter Mr Newman is. Totally his own thing and yet so accessible, even when he's singing about racism or murder or toys being lifelong friends. So, yeah, give me Ohio, my brain automatically supplies Dayton and 1903, and then a whole bunch of unnecessary stuff about Bill McKinley. And the colour red. Which I think Randy would approve of perhaps...

ETA - That extra instrument is melodica. It seems to be me side-instrument of choice this year.

[avatar]

Ah David! You are too generous with your listening ears to visit so many of my songs! Thank you!!!! Why are so many of my favourite fawmers called David? I will listen in turn in a couple of days, just… wanna… write… a… couple… more… songs…

[avatar]
@brisk

Ha ha, no problem - I'm thrilled that you did!

[avatar]
@brisk

Thanks for listening! I thought it was too obvious, but it's too oblique! It's meant to be a standard murder ballad sort of thing - killing the ex and burying her in the garden.

[avatar]
@brisk

P.S. - I'd never heard of the phrase "to say uncle" before: I had to work it in somewhere, I agree, it's amazing.

[avatar]
@brisk

Thanks for giving those a listen! I really appreciate it. I can't make up my mind whether I call it a day there or do a couple more. I think the fact that I'm not sure indicates which way the wind is blowing...

[avatar]
@boz

Thanks for you comments on my song “The White Star Line.” While this FAWM I’ve decided to do all on 4 track cassette, my actual recoding rig looks almost identical to yours - including the EZD! I look forward to getting back to the logic side!

[avatar]
@nadine

Congrats for 14+ songs! I feel like I have to catch up on many profiles next week! I'm still busy mixing the updates and the last songs. End of FAWM has never been so stressful like this year...

@cts

Hi. First off - I'd like to say congrats on getting +14. You are the MVP in my book. Man, it's always a pleasure to hear from you and to witness your versatility when it comes to making music. It's incredible. Secondly, I'm going to send you an email. I'm pretty sure by now you know it's going to be my annual request. There are a few that touched a feeling or two. Thirdly, I had envisioned you on that Jelly Invasion track. There are a few FAWMers I wanted to have on this, but time just wasn't working for me. I also wrote a Negro spiritual that I was hoping you'd help me with, too. It was supposed to close out the Jelly Invasion concept. Yeah, that's right. I was going to ask you to help transform the idea. Again, timing just wasn't quite there. Thanks for all the support, David. You are a gem to this community. All the best and I'll be in touch soon with my "wish list" 😀

@serene

aww thanks David, I'm so chuffed you like it and i know Rich will be too!

@jonmeta

2026 calendar marked! I'm watching out for when London FOP will be this year, though I need to travel to the States the last part of March, so it might be tricky.

[avatar]

Thanks for all your kind comments! Though I do need to point out that most of the melody on A Sun Warmed place was already in the piano part. I just stripped it out of the midi file so I could phrase it more freely. I do like those couple of V pedal tones I added near the end of the piece, however which was definitely more of a 'Liz' thing. Trust a bass player to know all the best pedal points!

@brisk

Apologies for being unclear: it was the incest allusions that I thought were (relatively) vague; I think we both agree the wanking stuff was pretty overt.

[sorry, I just really wanted to write this comment and not elaborate because that would have made it the best comment ever. I'm not strong enough though. Thanks for listening, it really helps! Sorry I haven't been very attentive; I've been mainly listening to my own songs obsessively on repeat rather than listen to other people's: obviously indicative of fatally compromised moral fibre. I will definitely give all yours a proper listen before they shut up shop though.]

[avatar]

Hello again, David. Thanks for listening to "Invisible" and offering your kind comments. There's some smoothing out to be done on it post-FAWM.

[avatar]
@nuno

Thanks for listening to Hyperion’s End and leaving such detailed comments about your take on it. Always appreciate you taking the time :)

[avatar]

Thank you for the lovely comment on my song 'no one shall sleep'

[avatar]
@beacon

Just sent you my vocals for Sing Together. Let me know if you have any questions.

[avatar]
@n24

Thank you for all your lovely comments :) I'm really enjoying your stuff this year! (I will catch up! Also, I would love to sit and listen to some Randy record with you any time! I have endless time for Randy Newman.

[avatar]

Hey David, I see you’ve almost hit the goal of 14 songs too, and many thanks for your kind comment on my slide guitar improv!

[avatar]
@jonmeta

Thanks, David, very gratifying coming from you whose musicality I admire enormously. I've always wanted to be in your band. A collab sometime would be fun!

[avatar]

Thank you for checking out my tune and your kind words! The bass is the only non-midi instrument on that one. Music Man direct in with a little EQ love.

[avatar]

Not a problem for me at all. I just thought it was funny that we both thought a Klon reference belonged in a song about guitar pedals. Maybe it's obvious, but it seems a bit esoteric to me. I guess we are in that same demographic, though. Anyway, thanks for the nice comments!

[avatar]

Thanks for the great comments about I Love You More Than My Guitar Pedals. And there actually is a reference to the Klon in the song! I guess you are the target audience for this!

[avatar]
@oddbod

cheers for the recommendation mention. you have mail

[avatar]

Thanks for the feedback on Hollow dreams, getting to sing to Nadine’s masterful tracks is always a pleasure

[avatar]

Good playing on the bass. I like playing bass but my chops are so rusty. I also have a P bass. Logic updated their bass sounds and I've been very pleased. You can even choose between picks, finger, and which fingers! It's insane. You can choose the style of bass you want from Hofner to Music Man. So I've been relying on those to save time because it's much easier to play it on keys.

@nadine

Sure feel free to pick "Buttery Vastness" as an album title. It is so hard for me to describe that impression of being a part of a BIG room with fluffy sofas where A LOT of things are moving, and not colliding. My mixes sound more like a small studio where 10 members play at the same time, and everybody fears to tread on cables (densely packed and highly efficient lol). I always struggle to mix songs that haves less than 15 tracks :O

I actually never used a tape plugin! I have no idea how and where to use them. And what the tape is doing physically (except for rotating and looking cool). When I heard of input gain issues my mind was already panicking! Are you talking about tape reverb? delay? saturizer? I mostly use digital and algorithmic plugins. But maybe that's the mathematician in me, who actually calculates (!!!) pre-delay times and falls in love with a good graphical representation of transfer functions and phases. Maybe we should nerd out after FAWM, would an interesting insight what we do differently and why...

[avatar]
@cts

Hey man - thank you so much for stopping by. Very much appreciated. I'm woefully behind on pretty much everything in FAWMland. So much going on right now, but I press forward. Have a great day!

[avatar]
@kosch

Thank for hanging out with our little blues jam - "Blue Wailing"

[avatar]

I just checked with Theodore, and he's fine waiting awhile. (He's like that.)

[avatar]

Oh mam, I didn't hear that until you mentioned it. The first couple of intervals on the piano DO sound a bit poguey. Ach well, at least I don't use any bad words.

[avatar]

You are such a dear! Well, about the vocal chords, half the time I don't know what will make it out or how! Right now they're blown, but I'll find my way around the froggy. Thanks for taking a listen to made of love. You're comments are most kind. This place has become a much needed respite, especially now, so keep those fabulous sounds comin'!

[avatar]

Thanks, David, for the lovely comment on the Infinite Loop! I hope you're enjoying FAWM!!

[avatar]

I just want to say thanks for all the thoughtful comments this FAWM. I don't know how you are able to balance such amazing music making while being such an active listener and positive commenter. You are a gift to this community!

[avatar]
@nadine

Thank you so much for your comments on "Hollow Dreams". Oh yes, this has been great fun to produce. @chrismyth02 contributed the hell of lyrics and vocals

[avatar]

Ok am uploading and emailing now, email will explain my edit, though it will be obvious.
