Hi, I'm Brooklyn-based ukulele player and teacher Jenny Selig (she/her) and I joined my first round of FAWM and then 50/90 in February 2023. 2025 marks my third year of FAWM.

With a background in poetry, theater, and performance, I have been playing uke since 2017 and sharing ukulele-based songwriting on social media and in-person since 2018. #fuc #ukulele

All my original songs end up here: http://tinyurl.com/seligsongs

I made up names for the genres I most often write in: 💀 #Americanasati - Americana infused with philosophical meditations on mortality and dread. (Americana + Maranasati) 🐿 #MidEmFoke - Midwestern Emotional Folk uke

I also want to write more FILK (I got an in-person FILK festival performance invite for this year!) and did someone say #horrorcountry?!

For FAWM 2025 my number one goal is to finish the handful of lyrical drafts I have left over from or since 50/90 2024.

Other than that, we'll see what happens! —- A note on collaborations: I am fairly new to collaborations but have had great experiences so far! If I write a lyrics-only draft and you offer to set it to music, please know I might also create my own solo, acoustic ukulele versions with any of my lyrics later, and the melody might be different, which doesn’t mean I don't like the music you or anyone else created around them.

I do also enjoy co-writing and setting other people's lyrics to music, as well as creating vocals/lyrics around someone else's instrumental piece. So if you want to collab, let's discuss!

PS. Just thought of the Homonym Micah from the Bible. Pondering.

Yes, I definitely lean Pisces

@cblack

Glad you enjoyed "Skittish"! 😀

Thank you!! Couldn't have done as much as I did without you.

@jamkar

Congratulations! You are so prolific.

Hi! I know FAWM's done, but would it be okay if I took a swing at making music for a couple of the lyrics-only songs? They're all amazing, and I can't help hearing things when I read them.

[avatar]

Thanks for the nice comment about I Love You More Than My Guitar Pedals. Much appreciated!

[avatar]

Thank you for the listen and nice words on Led You Here at Last. I appreciate the comment. We did a collab once a few years ago. If you have any lyrics that you think an acoustic treatment would be good. Let me know. Thanks again.

[avatar]

Thank you for commenting on the one song I needed feedback on the most (it was wallowing with one comment forever). It's funny, but throughout my focus on reaching 14 songs this year, GWB is the one song I keep going back to and making improvements to instead of waiting until FAWM is over.

BTW, your forum post "I want to see your songwriting notebooks" is one of the best this year; I have taken away so much from that forum.

@willlll

You're very welcome. Thanks for busting my zong. I kinda just hit my guitar randomly in the solo, but I'm glad it worked.

Thanks for the (now week old) comment about my songwriting books. I have a real problem. I can't stop buying them. I've probably got three or four now that I haven't even cracked the spine open on yet. I guess I had a minor success yesterday in that I managed to hold back from buying yet another one when I was at a bookstore, but I'll probably regret it.

@geercom

Thanks for your comments on my song Quiet Apocalypse! Glad you liked it. I think I can probably make it better. Let's see...

@namey

Thanks for listening. I have to confess, that is not really my lyric - this song is a take on/version of the English folk song/story Tam Lin. That line is in Anais Mitchell's version (or, in hers it's, 'I will be A gentleman'), as is 'hold me tight and fear me not'.

@willow1

You are Very perceptive, it IS a true story! At least according to my memory last night, haha! It’s interesting how recounting a story years after it happened (and not really telling it since the incident) is an interesting practice. Like my most told stories (and more dramatic experiences) probably have more exaggeration and embellishments because of it being a yarn I have spun over and over, time distorting the remembered facts..(depending also on the audience) never thought of that!

@ohljazz

Thanks for your kind comment on "Echoes" - there's definitely potential to flesh out that story more. I got as far as I could for a one-hour skirmish.

Hi, Jenny, Looking here at your page, I see I have some exploring to do. Even the titles are intriguing! I landed here because of your comment on A Man I Don't Know, my collab with @sheslin. I'm glad you could picture the scene we laid out, and flattered that it brought to mind "Killing Me Softly." I guess the two songs have the same underlying theme, and isn't it great that one emotion can be presented in so many different ways. Thanks for your comments.

[avatar]

Here is hoping for more high notes! 💯

[avatar]

Thanks for the nice comment on my song! have a wonderful day:)

[avatar]

My pleasure. The soppiest love song was SO cute!! Let me know if you add music, I'd love to hear it :)

Here's to having ducks in a row, then, taming organeziezed. But daydream believer? Hey, wasn't that a song? Best w your dream away, such cool turning of phrase.

Thanks for your feedback on my songs and for taking my suggestion under consideration. It was meant in a spirit of generosity and collaboration. I'd never change an intentional decision. Something about that line....

Cheers!

[avatar]

Thanks so much for checking out “uke without a rhyme”! Made my day! Blessings!

Hi Jenny. Thanks for visiting "King of an Empty Castle". Celine Ellis gave me some interesting lyrics to work with, so it was a fun job for me.

@tonyr

Thanks for the listen and kind words. Much appreciated.

[avatar]

Hey, thanks for your comment on the Toilet skirmish lol! Much appreciated 🧡

[avatar]

Aw, thanks for your comments on my kitty song! "Smurgle" is a word Jackson Galaxy uses for the "making biscuits" kneading move they do (maybe he coined it, not sure). It sounds so funny, so I decided to put it in the song. 😹 Seriously, he never was so annoying before when I was playing! I love him though. Because I think cat lovers are a bit masochistic when it comes to pets. 😜

@stuarthu
