Dear Cinderella
by @philkmills
Liner Notes
The story started with the #filk idea that tales ending "they lived happily ever after" don't necessarily say that they lived together happily. However, since the music started with the #hankwilliamsinhell challenge, I kind of mashed the concept into a more modern setting.
For the HWIH-curious, this is: verse 1114 5541 4441 1451
chorus 4411 4415 4141 1151
I also added a little intro and post-chorus interlude: 4155
Lyrics
Got a call from Cinderella, came out of the blue Asked me if I recognized her name Talked about some old friends and what happened in their lives It wasn’t quite the dream I’d had, but I liked it all the same
Our story ended with happily ever after Though I suppose “together” was implied Dear Cinderella, you taught me life’s not fantasy If years between were good to you that’s good enough for me.
I never thought about her buying cat food at the store Or loading up her Chevy with her kids In memory, I always saw glass slippers at a dance A ball gown, a tiara, not that second life she hid.
Our story ended with happily ever after Though I suppose “together” was implied Dear Cinderella, you taught me life’s not fantasy If years between were good to you that’s good enough for me.
She said there’s been a common theme, persistent in her life A failure to keep track of passing time But now and then a charming moment comes to her, uncalled And I think those moments are the same as one or two of mine,
Our story ended with happily ever after Though I suppose “together” was implied Dear Cinderella, you taught me life’s not fantasy If years between were good to you that’s good enough for me.
If years between were good to you that’s good enough for me.

This is so sweet. I don't have many Xes but I truly hope they are all doing well. "If years between were good to you that's good enough for me" is such a strong line. Oh that last verse makes me melt too. I REALLY like this one Phil! I really look forward to hearing it in person and maybe making some parts work in duet with @janeg ??
Love the concept of happily ever after really being content ever after
I love your idea of examining the implied togetherness. Beautiful lyrics and guitar.
Beautiful song and love the lyrics and whole idea of Cinderella’s other life. Great chorus and guitar work. Well done my friend!
A very touching story and you have managed to conjure up a very relatable melody. This has that folky feeling of maybe this has been sung throughout the ages. Good song.
Really love that chorus line where ‘together’ was implied - very clever take on the age old line before it. Love a bit of Hank in Hell!!
Nice. As has been said before, nice take on the old trope. Wistfully bittersweet.
I love the Hank in Hell challenge.
"But now and then a charming moment comes to her, uncalled And I think those moments are the same as one or two of mine, Our story ended with happily ever after Though I suppose “together” was implied"
Delightfully clever, Phil. Well done.
Beautiful song, a touch of melancholy with a nice dose of reality.
I love this! Such an interesting take on happily ever after! -Natalie
You are night together is just assumed! Clever idea nicely delivered
Good job with the Hank In Hell challenge. I started on, but failed. Oh well. This is has melancholy hint to it, but still remains joyous and excepting of the way it all turned out. I think your story here is much more realistic. Still, I always hope for the Hollywood ending.
This Prine level slice of life storytelling in vivid Kodachrome. Nicely done.
Aww this is such a bittersweet story! I love your vocal delivery on this, the feelings are expressed so clearly, especially in the chorus. You are a very good story teller, great stuff!
I'm simply loving this. And I love that not together did not equal unhappy. -char
