Not to offend any martial arts enthusiasts but sometimes we don't learn the biggest lesson of all. Here's a song about it.

Lyrics

There's a lot more to learn Than how to throw a punch When they taught it was mostly mental He must have missed that month He was just a cocky kid Who earned his belt too young Maybe now he's learned his lesson Sometimes you gotta hold your tongue

A brand new blackbelt got his ass kicked He let it all go straight to his head Every punch and kick was thrown Yeah, he's lucky he's not dead All those of years of practice Didn't help him in this fight A brand new blackbelt got his ass kicked tonight

They say he practiced every day For years and years on end They said he learned to punch and kick He learned how to defend I bet he planned on being fast His hands and feet a blur But he didn't plan for luck Or tripping on the curb

A brand new blackbelt got his ass kicked He let it all go straight to his head Every punch and kick was thrown Yeah, he's lucky he's not dead All those of years of practice Didn't help him in this fight A brand new blackbelt got his ass kicked tonight

Avoiding confrontation Is the biggest lesson learned And if you refuse to learn it Well, I guess you're gonna get burned

A brand new blackbelt got his ass kicked He let it all go straight to his head Every punch and kick was thrown Yeah, he's lucky he's not dead All those of years of practice Didn't help him in this fight A brand new blackbelt got his ass kicked tonight

This if folk music at its best. Some great storytelling here and boy, so applicable to all the posturing and grandstanding going on in the States and around the world. Love this verse: I bet he planned on being fast His hands and feet a blur But he didn't plan for luck Or tripping on the curb" How true! We never think about someone sticking there foot out as you're walking by and there you go taking a tumble, thinking you're a badass! I totally hear you on this one. Great write about the power that lies in the in the hands, heart and mind of the peaceful warrior.

I just learned about the Reciprocate button and thought, "That's genius!" and scrolled down to find you said the same thing, and the first click of the button brought me here. Nothing to do with the song, but felt like sharing what felt like kismet.

Great message in the lyrics, and the playful imagery is a great way to deliver it. I find it remarkable how little you spelled out the actual confrontation, because the scene was vivid in my head. Maybe I watch too much violence.

Really like this, a wryly observed lyric and the gentle musical setting supports really well. I used to do martial arts and experienced a few senseis who did preach that the best defence is not to be around when the blows fly, but the truth of the matter is that martial arts does attract a minority of highly insecure people with developmental delays who take the martial element too much to heart. I love the factual statement that 'a brand new blackbelt got his ass kicked tonight' very well done
