The Day They Turned Off Gravity
Liner Notes
I managed to finish another one... hurrah! Quality probably dipping at this point - vocal a bit rough around the edges, arrangement a bit same-y - but what are you gonna do?!
Got a bit carried away with key changes and weird changes here - became almost impossible to find a coherent vocal melody. Ah well. Lyrically, don't ask me - I've no idea where this stuff comes from either 🤷🏼♂️
Lyrics
Blue skies and a gentle breeze A t-shirt will do fine Meet a friend for coffee A place near yours or near mine?
But twenty minutes into a relaxed stroll Panic spread across my face For gravity had been switched off And I drifted into space
I waved at the birds as I floated by Their flapping now a futile pursuit And there were random objects spinning round Like leaves and garbage and fruit
And as I came to accept This awful predicament of mine It suddenly became all too clear That I was running out of time
And I pondered on the question Of which ending would be worst? The bitter cold, or the lack of air And which would get me first?
The day they turned off gravity Oh, what a thing to do The day they cut the cord Between the ground and me & you

Nicely paired selection of ‘spacey’ sounds for the theme of this. The key changes are pretty smooth to me, as the shifts don’t feel obvious and the seemingly effortless melodies float over nicely. Enjoying how you’ve managed to let yourself go with the flow in your writing style this year, efficiency with less time for writing at play perhaps? Wish I could do the same rather than deliberating over things for hours on end! Really fun concept too, gravity is such a bizarre thing when you consider it.
I love the Phil Oakley quality to your vocals. That melody on "meet a friend for coffee" is beautiful, it really caught my ear. There is a lot of interesting stuff going here with the programming, the chords, the production.
Love the absurdity of this track 😄 really fun! Your voice is beautiful and silky smooth ✨ As already mentioned, love the wobbly synths
A fun, surreal journey. I was surprised when the situation was described as an "awful predicament"...a humorous take on magical realism to think of it as unwanted. Loved when the bass synth came in.
I have a theory that your singing voice is the equivalent of Charles Dance’s speaking one: so much gravitas — no pun intended — that it can elevate literally anything. Thing is though, this isn’t fluff. Feels like a cautionary tale about that period of blissful isolation when you’re in a new relationship. I thought this was very charming! The wobbly synths were very nice.
Hate it when this happens.
The music is perfect for the lyrics, which... now going back I realize I wasn't listening super closely because I was so taken by the floaty vibes. Turns out it's terrifying to be headed toward the hostile vacuum of space! But this song is a sonic treat. I have to go back and listen again now.
Haha, the anti-thesis to This Thing With You & Me. Deliciously eccentric and capricious - it's sort of comfortingly disorientating with the progression, which goes nicely with the lyric.
Floating into the apocalypse like a balloon... it sounds liberating and beautiful... but, wait....!
Very cool lyrics—love how playful and weird your stuff has been this year!
