Motorcade

Liner Notes

14th song!... #artrock #minimalism #punk #postpunk

The backing came first, and was produced about a couple of days ago, with the intention of being a constant riff and drumbeat to support some lyrics. Those words eventually came about after taking note of various things I saw while walking around the semi-official London district of Fitzrovia yesterday morning. I also drew on some very grim articles I'd read ages ago about soft drink manufacturing in the developing world, which just somehow fit.

Yesterday was also an important day for me personally, though I won't go into the reasons why just yet. I've re-gained a sense of defiance in recent weeks that I once thought was completely lost.

Lyrics

Stood by the side by the side by the side by the side of the road While a motorcade motorcade motorcade motorcade drove past Saw a sticker on a sticker on a sticker on a sticker on a sticker on a lamp-post, lamp-post It said "Orgreave 1984" It said "Orgreave 1984" "Orgreave 1984" Orgreave 1984

The thing about Cokes is that they're all the same And Coke is cheaper than water You can baptise your baby with the stuff

And you can drink it while the motorcade motorcade motorcade motorcade drove past Saw a sticker on a sticker on a sticker on a sticker on a sticker on a lamp-post, lamp-post It said "Orgreave 1984" It said "Orgreave 1984" "Orgreave 1984" Orgreave 1984

It's the real thing

That riff is intense and insistent, especially in combination with that gunshot snare. Repetition in the lyrics is really effective, and the coke section in the middle gives just enough respite. I know you explained in the liner notes already but I still like to imagine that you witnessed a baby being baptised in coke on the streets of Fitzrovia and were all like "right, that's going in the song".

Terse, angry, and vivid. I remember that battle (and it was a battle). Let's hope that current events are just Thatcherism's death rattle.
