The Last Weekend

Skirmish: The last weekend (@hudders6400598)

Liner Notes

A very late entry for the skirmish "The Last Weekend" - written and recorded within the hour.

I have been reading the poetry of Wilfred Owen this week, so I think that's where this initially came from. It's a different war, but, like all wars, the human consequences are the same.

PS What doesn't the Orange Nightmare understand about the chorus?

INSTRUMENT: Kala FMTE-C Tenor Ukulele (Low G) #fuc #war #lovesong

(Dm) Anichka's looking down this (Gm) morning She's listening once again to that sad (Dm) song (Bb) Time flies they say when you're (Dm) having fun But she (Bb) knows this (C) weekend won't be (Dm) long (Gm) Could be the last one we spend to(Dm)gether (C) A fact we both have to con(Dm)front (Gm) My orders came in the mail this (Dm) morning I am (Bb) needed (C) back at the (Dm) front

(G) We never asked to be in(Dm)vaded (G) We're not the aggressors in this (Dm) war (G) Memories of peace have almost (Dm) faded But we (Bb) know (C) what we are fighting (Dm) for

(Dm) Anichka's putting on a (Gm) brave face "We'll have some fun today!" she (Dm) claims (Bb) But I know the smile she's (Dm) giving me Is (Bb) one she's (C) struggling to main(Dm)tain (Gm) I've been so lucky in the (Dm) trenches But a (C) run of luck can come to an (Dm) end (Gm) We both know, deep (Dm) down in our hearts This (Bb) could be our (C) very last week(Dm)end

Wonderfully done, poignant, heart rending, and captive. Your story telling skills are incredible!

Fabulous story telling with a compelling lyric that reaches deep and captures the impact of war in an intimate way - so relevant and moving. The melody and chords fit the lyric well.

Good addition to the war-song genre with this grim, hard-hitting tale. (Owen was a master at his craft, by the way.) I like the vocals and the turns of the melody ... the minor key suits. As a combat vet myself, I say bravo.

Wow Berni! I have no idea how long your recording and writing took, but its been completely worth it. I like the ballads feel while discussing a dark topic. You portray the cruelty of war both as soldiers but also their families.
