Welcome Traveler
Liner Notes
This one started with the goal to write a song with the banjo in sawmill tuning. I then got inspired by some Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings songs where she's on banjo and he's capoed up on guitar, such as "One Morning" and "Rock of Ages". I absolutely LOVE that sound, though I can't understand how Dave seems to play both lead and rhythm guitar at the same time…
It took a little bit to come together, and I’m not fully sure about all the words. Probably the most drafty of my songs this year. The first verse largely just came out, which immediately reminded me of the scary danger of nighttime overland travel in Minecraft. (My brother and I often “hang out” together from opposite coasts via Minecraft.)
But then I got slammed by the flu, which derailed everything for several days. I finally decided to record this in bed using just my laptop mic with one take for each track. Gotta love that flu voice! I’m pretty amazed by the quality to be honest, but latency forced me to manually shift tracks to make them (hopefully) line up. Anyhow, I’m glad I got this one across the finish line before the end of FAWM!
Lyrics
Summer in the valley Mountains in the snow Gone to see my brother A long way to go
Flint in my pocket Steel in my hand Slip through the darkness Slip through the land
Leave it Leave it all behind I’ll take A new state of mind
The Devil’s in the hollow Don’t look him in the eye No time to slow down I’ll sleep by and by
Smoke in the distance A cry of the lamb A hearth and a warm meal Can ease a worried man
Leave it Leave it all behind I’ll take A new state of mind
love the sound here - an enjoyable listen
