Whither the Cats of Your Fresh Spotless Youth (Make a List!)

by @freshspotlessyouth

Liner Notes

#indierock I took a couple of liberties. First of all, my kid actually said, "So will you." Checkmate, and hello Gingerale. That orange sweetie died young, however. Secondly, Lily is snoring at my side right at this moment

Lyrics

My kid said, Daddy, can we get a cat? I said, It’ll die She said, So will I

Think of Every cat you’ve loved How you weeped and wailed When their time had come When you put them down Could you name them now You picked them up You picked them out Could you name them now You took them home They gave you love Could you name them now

Every time one dies You get a new one There’s always new ones You can make a list If you live long enough You’ll leave one off

Cakeface, Lily, Dusty, Ashleigh, Minchie, Gingerale And then that tortoiseshell Sleek and soft and friendly She would lick me as she twitched her tail But I can’t name her Diablo! My sweet fat one How [it floored me] when his liver failed

Go on and make a list If you live long enough You’ll leave one off

I love the style, especially with the distorted guitar sound against all the clean sounds. And, Heaven knows, I've lived this song!

A very pretty song about our furbabies!

they are family! that is a brilliant line, if you live long enough you will leave one off. I name and count on my fingers and have half a dozen times. this isn't as sad to me as I thought reading it! you give the feeling of love yet inevitably of loss!

I think you wrote another song about dealing with a cat's death (last fawm or 5090)? Anyway, I love animals. This is tough to listen to, for me, as a result. In any event, love this style in general.

Really clever take on death - love that first verse. Stanley is sitting right next to me while I listen. Very sad song, but with an air of "that's life - we just need to go on." Lovely vocals and melodic guitar.

The music suits the spirit of fine feline companions. Love how light and breezy this is, even with the heavy subject matter - a nice contrast. May Bast watch over your kittyfriends.

Love the production on this. Sounds so crystal clear like dipping into a cool spring in the summer 😄 . Great arrangement and love the lyrics. Such a strong chorus delivered in an understated fashion. Loving your song titles!

Love that intro verse, sets the tone for the rest of the song, how fun, and how true (For most of us anyway). Catchy melody too and I appreciate your clear pronunciation of everything.

Oh, so cute! ♥️ Made me remember Lilly ( the white Lady),Lusie (who adopted me as her mom), Speedy (the Buddhist), Claire, Felix, Bobbie (Marley), Cleo, Lieschen! I miss them!

Aww, a subject close to my heart. This is beautifully bittersweet.

Tucker, Tikka, Henry, Rafa, Agnes. Honourable mentions to Nelson and Cassie who were never technically mine. Still loved em though.

Nice heartfelt tribute to cats and the relationships we develop with them!

I liked the whimsical 60's pop sound of the beginning. This is highly original and goes to the top of the songs about deceased pets category. Thanks for reminding me to make my list (before I forget).

A+ for originality on this song! I like how this is grounded in real life stuff. Love how you flipped the lyric - what a kid thing to say 😆. I like your fresh indie sound. The "think of" section is my favorite, and that melodic interval you use and also the use or repetition really upped how those words hit me. I also like how this song is about something sad, but also something so real which we all deal with in our lives - but adding the list component kind of lightened it a bit for me which was lovely. Really cool song.

a litany of cat pets. and you are right, one cannot remember the names of them all. no matter how much one loved them at the time. it is different with people. i remember them all.

aww, this is heartfelt and beautiful and so well done. love the way you started the whole thing, even if you had to tweak that story of what your kid said a bit. excellent write and great recording and performance too

Good (if sadly true) point about cats ... I can't name all of ours, though I can name all of our dogs ... funny. Great tune and delivery. Congrats on another successful FAWM, my friend.
