Yesterday, I heard?

Liner Notes

I think this song popped along as I was waking up one morning, I found myself singing the chorus so quickly recorded it and it sat on my phone for a few weeks before I struggled to complete it in Feb. Got a rough demo down, then had a lil rest after the rush of February and recorded this relitively quickly.

I enjoyed doing the start yyyyyyyyy intro and bringin it back later, i may have tried to work it into the song a bit more if I had more time (or could be bothered). I like the slidy guitar notes on the verse. I was going to slide into every note in each chord, but in the small amount of time I had to do this my brain couldn't work it out, so only ended up doing two of the six strings.

I was going to call it Yesterday, but I don't think you can call a song Yesterday on it's own without Macca breathing down your throat and insisting on some scrambled eggs. Maybe the extra part infurs a bit of the story behind the song.

While writing I was thinking about the people in your life who arent really in your life. For example the barman at your local pub who has served you for years, the guy working in the corner shop or maybe just somone you pass on the street every wednesday morning while out to walk the dog. Sometimes they just leave and you never see them again. And worse, there is no way of knowing what has happened to them - you had no real connection in the world, and now that is lost. This song mourns the loss of casual connections.

Lyrics

Yesterday, I heard somebody say you were leaving town Oh well Yesterday I heard somebody say you weren’t around Oh yeah yesterday I heard somebody say You were leaving town Oh yeah yesterday I heard somebody say your not around anymore

For my next trick I will make myself disappear You might not notice right away That I’m not here The boy who stammered when he spoke But couldn’t hold his tongue pulling pints at the red lion He smelled and sandalwood and cedar

Yesterday, I heard somebody say You were leaving town Yesterday I swear somebody said you weren’t around Oh yeah yesterday I heard somebody say You were leaving town Oh yeah yesterday I heard somebody say your not around anymore

It took a while To slowly sunk in And I know We barely spoke But it still feels like I’m missing something The boy with ambition The boy who loved competition His dad was a politician I’m sure you’d recognise his long long face

Yesterday, I heard somebody say You were leaving town Yesterday I turned around and you were gone Oh yesterday I heard somebody say You were leaving town Oh yesterday I’ve never felt this way so let down

I knew it wouldn’t last forever You were a rare and treasured feather Free To float on future’s breeze You don’t have to have the answers No need for you to try and solve it your light danced furtively past mine Never properly intertwined

Yesterday, I heard somebody say You were leaving town Yesterday I turned around and you were gone Oh yesterday I heard somebody say You were leaving town Oh yesterday I’ve never felt so let down

Fabulous. Lovely story - really well paced. I really like the up beat 80s pop feel with the grimy noises going on all around and the way the tune goes in unexpected directions. Lots of fun!

This is a very lively song with a catchy melody. Great musical arrangement too. I especially like the drums. Great song!

Great topic for a song, and the music holds my interest throughout. Some nice surprises in the chords and a cool rhythm.

I had someone mention to me a few weeks ago that they saw themselves as being one of those people that everyone knows but nobody knew--- much along the lines of the lyric here. I like the musical contrast between the chorus and the verse a LOT. Nicely done.
