Liner Notes

#indiefolk A follow up to my first song about Marc Jacobs's $575 Kiki boots. What is the genre? I'm pretty bad at guitar...and worse at recording, but I like the song. In case you missed it, the heel fell off

Lyrics

I strapped signifiers to my feet When I wanted shoes I drank my whiskey neat When I wanted ice cubes in that drink I wanted ice cubes in my drink I wanted ice cubes I wanted ice cubes

Kiki Boots Supple Soft Exclusive Blew my budget But then walking home The heel fell off The heel fell off The heel fell off Revealed the hollow core It was motherfucking plastic I thought they would outlast me But then walking home The heel fell off The heel fell off The heel fell off Revealed the hollow core Fuck you Marc Jacobs Luxury’s your trademark But there’s talking And there’s walking And the heel fell off The heel fell off Revealed our hollow core Fuck you Marc Jacobs Luxury’s your trademark But there’s talking And there’s walking And the heel fell off

I strapped signifiers to my feet When I wanted shoes I drank my whiskey neat When I wanted ice cubes in that drink I wanted ice cubes in my drink I wanted ice cubes I wanted ice cubes

Love the repetition of ice cubes and "the heel fell off."

As others have mentioned, this is a really great example of "show, don't tell." With the hollow core at the center of so many things these days.

This has a really unusual structure, which I really dig. And I love how "fuck you Marc Jacobs" just boils up out of it. The various different and evolving emotes on the ice cubes line are great. There's so much going on under the surface here, and the theme bubbles through it and informs it so well. Really dig this one. #titfortat

There are plenty of songs that will spend four verses telling you about the evils of commercialism in 16 different ways, but you've done it with one image of a heel falling off (and a corollary about ice cubes not being cool enough). And the 'there's talking and there's walking' sums it all up in one neat phrase that anywhere else would be a cliché but here it's the perfect apropos putdown of a shoemaker. As usual, your music is memorable and singable without showing off.

I think indie folk works as for the genre. Love how pretty and melancholic it sounds. I could definitely envision this on an album as a reprise to the earlier song

Boy, if this isn't an allegory for late-stage capitalism. I say to hell with the tastemakers, I too prefer my whiskey on the rocks. Cheers!

Contemplative and lovely as always; just utter pop bliss. And that first verse; those lyrics are so well-said, and such an accurate reflection of ... well, I was about to say the "modern world," but I suspect that wanting to be part of the cool crowd has existed as long as humans have.

@wacha

This is a brilliant folk song. I think you are doing a fine job singing and playing on this one. It's a writing month, not a production month. Well done!

God I’m right there, on the street of New York with my fucking heel breaking off. Those are nice chords. I still don’t know what Kiki boots are l. And you use a click? How pro, I should do that with my one takes, I just raw dog it.

The first and last verses are wonderful ... something very sad about "I wanted ice cubes." A really good example of your style: intelligent, melancholy, witty and reflective. Loved it!

Yup I remember it falling off! Gotta have ice cubes! I live on them! I wouldn’t trade the cubes for a new heel

Hilarious, poignant and trenchant: Robyn Hitchcock would be very jealous of this one. Well done!

Just completely bound with truth. Looking forward to hearing what's next. Great work!

Always enjoy the way you rework and update your ideas into new things. You haven't used the line "these boots weren't made for walkin'" yet so I'm going to need at least one more! The guitar is so sweet and gentle on this one, it's really pretty.

Well, I of course had to come and listen to the sequel. This is also great -- more killer lines. The opening line is such a mic drop, but I really really like the "there's walking / and then there's talking / and the heel fell off" that's soooo freaking good.

It seems it has been a traumatic experience that the fucking heel fell off! I have to google those shoes!

Coming to your song: great lyrics as always! You sang it in a kind of annoyed but also reserved way! As a contrast you play the guitar really gently and light!

Great work as usual!

you describe what is wrong in america better than any maga or woke socialigist. it is a country over run by people drinking the booze neat when they really want to dilute it with ice cubes, and on their way home from the bar, break their high heels because they cant walk straight and then blame it on the shoe designer.
