Silhouetted Skylines (feat. Drive-a-tron)

Liner Notes
Last Tuesday I wandered to the Majestic Theater in Madison to see Mr. Experience himself, Donny Benet. To my surprise, opening the show was Paul from Drive-a-tron, who I knew of, but didn't know. I said hey after the show, and a couple of days later threw out an invite to do a co-write. Paul struck while the iron was hot, and on Saturday morning we had a lovely time jamming to some lovely melancholy pop riffs and eating donuts. After a couple of hours he had to wander off, and I was able to stitch a fun tune together from the ideas we started.
This probably turned out very differently than if we'd done all of the crafting together, but that's not a good or bad thing. It was a lot of fun bridging a set of connected jams into a full production. There's some very cool rhythmic handoffs between the various instruments, which I think Paul was hearing in real-time but I didn't catch explicitly until I was stitching everything together. This is a fun one, and I'm curious to see where he'd go with the melody / lyrics on his own.
It's been ages since I've done an in-person, first-time collab, so that was pretty exciting. And now I know Paul, who seems like an excellent dude. Long live Drive-a-tron! https://www.drive-a-tronmusic.com/
Lyrics
V Back seat city silhouetted skylines Neon lighting incoherent street signs Young blood dreaming of the light of day Feeling like they still have something to say
About the middle of the road that they're running on The Sling back high heeled marathon Keeping up with all other rats in the maze Chasing towards the shape of silhouetted skylines
Always someone asking for money to pay Giving every reason for running away Living for that moment on the edge of the night When it feels like everything you ever wanted just might
Deliver you love and deliver you dreams And free you from the hum of those remixed machines Walking through the city searching for those lights Searching for the shape of silhouetted skylines
C Everything you think you wanted Everything you'll never need Everything that fits inside you You'll figure out You'll figure out it's always free
V Free from heartache and free from pain Free from anything that at all that might remain Looking for nirvana at the subway station Finding that it's really just dissociation
Stare into the distance, start to think it over Horizon's never really getting any closer But we all go to the shadows every waking day Drawn to the shape of silhouetted skylines
C Everything you think you wanted Everything you'll never need Everyplace you've ever haunted Every word that you've decreed Everyone that fits inside you You'll figure out You'll figure out they're always free

Great imagery and sound to the lyrics. Such a big-sounding arrangement, with lots of textures! I particularly like the way the guitar is counterpointing the vocals. Love the contrast between the syllable-packed verses and the soaring choruses. Must be something in those donuts.
Wow this really cool. Such slick production and levels. I love the way that the lyrics are delivered rhythmically and your timing is spot on. The lyrics are really strong too. Great track and glad I stumbled across your page.
You totally nailed the pop! The production is stellar and your voice! Killed it.
Oh - this is some fantastic newwavey pop goodness. Love the guitar layer interplay.
You'll figure out You'll figure out they're always free! Love it!
Great track! Love it!
Nice 80s feel and I can instinctively feel that there’s some funky upbeat rhythms going on but can’t put my finger on it. The chorus is delightful and stayed in my head after I finished.
Love that new wave sound, the vocal effects are great and work so well with the other sounds. As always, your production work is top notch. Free me from the hum of those remixed machines! By which I mean, cool lyrics, too.
Hurrah for meeting new people! Hurrah for in-person collabs! And hurrah for writing a proper good song! I get a big 80s New Wave vibe off this which pleases me immensely.
Great production. Catchy and fun.
I love this. It's such a Das Binky track! It feels like driving, looking out the windows at the city going by. Love the imagery and those descending bing bing bings.
