Marching Through Greenland

Liner Notes

After "Breaking the ICE," I have to give equal time to the other side, don't I? The tune is "Marching Through Georgia" by Henry C. Work. #filk #political

Lyrics

Marching Through Greenland Words: Gary McGath, Copyright 2025 Music: Henry C. Work, “Marching Through Georgia”

Bring the gloves and heavy boots, we'll sing another song. Sing it with a spirit that will show we won't take long. The island's population isn't sixty thousand strong, So we'll go marching through Greenland.

Refrain: Hurrah, hurrah! We'll make our country great. Hurrah, hurrah! The fifty-second state. So we'll sing the chorus while we walk or ski or skate, As we go marching through Greenland.

All the battles that we win will fill a history book, We'll be hailed as liberators as we enter Nuuk, Then supply our trip back home with all the stuff we took, As we go marching through Greenland.

Refrain

We will never shiver as for battle we prepare. There's no foe too dangerous, no odds we wouldn't dare When we face a reindeer or a seal or polar bear, As we go marching through Greenland.

Refrain

Greenland's an expensive toy that Denmark pays to keep. We'd, of course, economize and hold it on the cheap. Still we wonder, if the island's price is so damn steep, Why are we marching through Greenland?

This would be really fun if it weren’t so upsettingly close to the edge of reality! I love the pompous energy and enthusiasm that you bring to it! The chorus! Dang! I get an image of the trumpian minions high stepping through village streets …. Not a great image. Now I have to listen to another song to get this image out of my head!

Oh wow, i wish donald tit could hear this. It should be blasted out in congress. It made me giggle but also made me dismay. Again the perfect voice for this type of song

Woah! Yes. What song.

I sure wish you did not have to write something this barbed. But you nailed it.

I was just watching some of a Tom Lehrer concert at Copenhagen thanks to a YouTube link a friend of mine sent me. This feels very like it would keep good company with the first three songs or so of that concert.

Wryly smiling with Phil as I listen. Such interesting times to live in!

Wry smile here all the way through. "fifty-second state" has fascinating implications for a Canadian.
