Ice Skating on the Walking Trail

I took a walk this afternoon to get some exercise and perhaps some inspiration. You folks in climates that get snow will know this pattern: snow, thaw, refreeze. A good deal of my walk was over sidewalks that had glassy icy patches of refreeze--and that was the inspiration. Watch your step, baby. Reaper and Band in a Box.

Ice Skating on the Walking Trail © 2025 Mark Greenberg

Time to go out for my daily walk Enjoy the melting snow in the neighborhood park I’m on the go now, I got it made Til I ran into ice when I stepped in the shade

Snow banks thaw then freeze to glass It’s hard to see ice on a walking path

Ice skating on the walking trail, ice skating on the walking trail One bad step and I’m on my tail Ain’t no big thing if I just stay calm I should make it all the way around Chippewa Pond

You can do the dance if you start to slip Move your booty to the left but don’t break a hip Do a backward flop but don’t crack your head Cause if the sun goes down you might freeze to death

I didn’t bring my clamp on cleats So I’ll just wave my arms and shuffle my feet

Ice skating on the walking trail, ice skating on the walking trail One bad step and I’m on my tail Ain’t no big thing if I just stay calm I should make it all the way around Chippewa Pond

Heartwarming during a cold snap! Daily walks give so much energy and ideas. It's a good reminder :) Great lyrics and loving those organ keys.

You are talking about most of my winter. I usually walk in our park which has lots of ups and downs but thats border line dangerous in this winter's conditions. Like the Rock format. Nicely done

What nice company to have on an icy walk - makes me almost sorry the path I’m on has already thawed. I especially liked how you withheld the slightly crass rhyme for glass, but then gave in and gave us tail and then hip. Also that catastrophizing notion that if you break your hip you might freeze to death. I kept wanting to break in and tell the singer to walk like a duck or penguin - vector down, not out. So I guess I’m hooked.

Yup, I've done that dance more than I care to think about! The title definitely drew me in as it seems that e are spending a lot of time ice skating on hiking trails right now. Really fun song and so relatable!

Well, my feet have definitely soared into the air and landed on my tail more times than I can count...because of the ice! 😝 Honestly, I think I’ve experienced every single scenario you mentioned from start to finish. Excellent lines and fun groove. The humor throughout keeps the pains of the falls in a nice light. Well done! I can't believe I'm heading back to the East Coast!😄 Hope my daughters know how much I love them... haha! P.S. I will try to do everything in my power to bring some heat back with me! P.S.S. I haven't made it known on FB about this yet lol

I had to come just for the title! Nice blues song, strong lyrics. Love the rhymes ( just stay calm, Chippewa Pond) and the image of dancing with the movements of falling! Be careful out there. I broke my arm in 2018 with a fall. I have microspikes now, but like you, don't have them.on when I need them!

Nice, relaxed boogie. I read the title and immediately knew the feeling. In fact, we just got back from a walk outside, which was calm at first, and raining sharp icy bits when we got home, yuck! Of course, the treachery level increased dramatically as well. I smirked throughout the listen. "Do the dance" is funny, and all the ways to fall down... Ah, I know them well 😆 Love the organ touches. Way to catch the inspiration where you can get it!

Nice blues-rock groove. I like the organ piping up in the back. Amusing lyrics. I'm originally from Texas (and back living there now) but I spent 3 years in graduate school in Grand Forks, North Dakota, and this song is bringing back memories of walking (skating) to and from class. The sidewalks that had a slight slope were the worst!!
