Please Be Kind

I wrote this as a little acoustic number but heard a FAWMer using some excellent soundscapes yesterday so wanted to blow the dust off of my Electro-Harmonix Cathedral reverb pedal and this dark unsettling song came out of it. Quite a change from the happy bouncy little song that I originally wrote! It all came together so quickly as well and I think it sounds like I've spent a bit of time on it.

The inspiration for the lyrics was a quote I heard on a telly programme I'm watching. The quote was, "Tip the world over on its side, and everything loose will land in Los Angeles,”- Frank Lloyd Wright. When I heard it, I thought, I'm having that!

Lyrics

Tip the world up on its side, and everything that’s not tied down, will all amass beneath our feet, And so on, rinse and repeat, And all the while we end up with, what we all deserve to get, So be kind, And let them be, I know they’d do the same for me.

Use your sympathy, If you’ve any, Kindness is a gift, That comes at such a little cost.

We kinda lived before we died, If you skip to the end you’ll find, We shoulda oughta lived a fuller life, We used it up, forgot the hay, That we made on those sunny days, Before the world got hot and just gave up.

I like this song a lot, great mood, great chord choices, superb sound! And not to forget the message! I'll listen again.

Circling back to comment on this. The steady guitar that carries throughout took me back to buying Mogwai's "Young Team" album as a teenager, without hearing it first. I had no Idea what to expect, but the unobtrusive atmosphere had me leaning into the speakers, waiting so patiently for what would come next, and then being intrigued around why they never felt the need to take it to the top. This held that same power over me. Excellent skillful delivery, restraint, and with the very soulful vocals make this a place that can't be easily replicated. Thanks for this one!

Great playing throughout the whole dang song. Wonderful harmonies! And that soaring falsetto in the chorus! Great work on this floaty instrumentation, it's dark, but it's far from unwelcoming. Great, swirling outro that got me closing my eyes and hovering with it.

You always delivery such a great performance on all your songs. The music is dark and moody but the message is such a great sentiment...Great stuff. #tit4tat

That swoopy melody ("use your sympathy") is very arresting - and a really nice counterpart to the (also very nice) verse melody. I love the chorus chord progression too - it brings to mind a more "popular american songbook" kind of thing which is really tasty and goes so well. Overall this sounds really professional to me, and I'm rather in awe of it. What a great bit of work.

I really love the lyrics here. Dark and brooding and they fit so well with the music. Perfect melody for the chorus and I like the way your voice lifts on the first words of the chorus.

Not sure how a "happy bouncy little song" turned into this, but I'm glad it did - nice piece of work. Obviously some Jeff Buckley vibes going on.

Really love the harmonies in this; As someone who loves doing harmonies on dark and broody beats, I live for it haha. The lyric of "We kinda lived before we died" will be ringing in my head all day. Definitely a favorite of mine! (•‿•)
