You Did Not Know Him Like I Did

Liner Notes
I was kind of out of ideas.. but I found a list of local street names, I would see on my bike rides... I had, at one time planned to build a song around them, but never got to it. (was there a street name challenge one year? Maybe 50/90? Anyway...)
I've never been a story teller in my writing, but this was fun to build - I'm glad I have some interesting street names to work with! Maybe a #murderballad ?
As a side note... at our last picking party there was some capo related discussion among the guitar players (I'm typically playing harmonica at those things, unless I'm leading the song) and it was decided that placement any higher than the 5th fret was silly... so, of course, this is #capo7 😆
Anyway - this is an #acousticonetake (recorded directly after writing, so bear that in mind.) of my wander through my neighborhood. Streets used: Ben Merrill Rd Rose Marie Lane Titus Coan Rd Ironworks Rd Reservoir Rd Taylor Ridge Princess Pine Kelseytown Bridge (and I misread Marieann as Moriah in my horrible handwriting...)
Lyrics
You Did Not Know Him Like I Did Ben Merrill took the call. Hadn't been sheriff very long Titus' body was growing cold, and, Rose Marie, she was just gone
Titus Coan laid on the floor, Steak knife in his chest Well, even the papers got that much But, some of us, knew the rest
Titus Coan was an evil man, Lived up on Taylor Ridge He used to run the old Ironworks...but that wasn't all he did
You Did Not Know Him Like I Did You Did Not Know Him Like I Did
He liked his money, oh, he liked his wine. But, he liked his women... getting younger, all the time
Out past the old Reservoir, half way to Princess Pine Once you cross that Kelseytown Bridge, there ain't nothing but the Coan mine.
And there's an old graveyard there - won't show on any map Young ladies, over the years, have gone up, but they ain't come back
You Did Not Know Him Like I Did You Did Not Know Him Like I Did
The world's a better place with him gone The world's a better place
Oh, I knew Moriah, since her family came on though On that day, she up and disappeared, I kew what I had to do.
Comes a time in every man's life - gotta think about the things he's done Not sure this is one of those times, but that bell can never be un-rung
Now I'm wondering if Hell is real, as it's likely where I'll go But, if it is, I know I'll see my old friend Titus Coan

Sweet guitar sound - high capo works here, especially to counter your awesome storytelling vocal. And what a story (and story behind the story in the liner notes)! Every FAWM or 50/90, I hear one or two songs I'd like to cover. This is one of those - love it!
A fun idea to use street names but to get such a dark storyline from them is very clever.
What's intriguing to me is who are the "some of us" that knew the rest? The singer? Rose Marie? There's a more detailed story here....
Love the idea of using street names all in one song - did that once myself with store names. You used them to tell a very strong story with great delivery. Your protagonist is lucky not to have joined Titus on the floor.
This title definitely caught my attention! I love the concept for this song and your fun delivery. Great job incorporating street names into a song and telling a compelling story.
Love that "give up but the ain't done back line", the upbeat music goes well with the lyrics
Ha, I love this. Great lyrics and the guitar fits it perfectly.
What a deep dark and engrossing story. These lines made it spine chilling: "And there's an old graveyard there - won't show on any map Young ladies, over the years, have gone up, but they ain't come back"
So, is this this narrator, picking up where old Titus left off? A predator predecessor. Amazing use of all the street name. Very clever! Nice guitar and rhythm of the vocals. I enjoyed it!
