You Betcha

Challenge: PUBLIC DOMAIN

Liner Notes

A little "Old McDonald", the alcoholic version, for this week's challenge. #week3 #publicdomain I didn't jump into many collabs this year and missed doing the harmony challenge, so I added five layers of vocals by the end to my #banjo for this - just "oh fer fun".

Lyrics

There’s a widow down the street You betcha don’t ya know She drinks her wine dry not sweet You betcha don’t ya know With a cabernet here A shiraz there Here a red there a white Every glass poured right There’s a widow down the street You betcha don’t ya know

That old widow’s life’s been hard You betcha don’t ya know So she likes her liquor also hard You betcha don’t ya know With a whiskey here A bourbon there Here a gin there a scotch Every glass is top notch That old widow’s life’s been hard You betcha don’t ya know

The widow’s loved so do not fear You betcha don’t ya know Because her fridge is full of beer You betcha don’t ya know With a porter here A brown ale there Here a stout, an IPA Everything is A-OK The widow’s loved so do not fear You betcha don’t ya know

You betcha don’t ya know

This song makes me feel badly for the widow's liver and kidneys, loved or not. Funny lyric and a massive reframing of the old kid's song!

Great song and theme! I like the recording very much as well, clear and nicely balanced. There is a biographical book by a german actor who talks about his grandparents and their love for everything alcoholic in their late years. Your song reminds me of it. Alcohol is such a horrible and destructive thing, and sadly it’s in a lot of peoples lives and we have to deal with it, this story being slightly on the brighter side, if one can say so.

Banjo! Wonderful picking on this one. A fantastic ode to our favorite poisons :) I will say that you are loved not JUST for your beer fridge! Gorgeous harmonies as ever Mom.

Clever and sad and fun. Alcoholism is such a challenging issue for many. Your lyrics are wonderful and your delivery is fabulous. I really love the Northern Midwest last line! Perfect!

Very creative. I like your lyric and simple melody, but I especially like the harmonies. They are rich, full and blend beautifully. Well done!

Wow, you took the melody but made it your own, the banjo is fabulous!!! The harmonies create a truly unique experience for a classic children’s song turned more mature. I can see this as a pub song with people yelling out their personal favorites in added verses… it would also make a fun one for open mic sometime :)

An entertaining rendition. Wonderful harmonies and a fun concept.

I was laughing aloud from the first verse on.

If you don't mind a suggestion, why not lose the double "hard" rhyme as follows:

"That old widow’s life’s been hard So she drinks her liquor from a jar"

I just had to listen to it twice! Loved it even more a second time. This would go down a storm at a folk club! Is it OK if I sing it in my pub gigs? - What's your real name so I can give you the credit for the lyrics.

PS I would also add "red" to this line to improve the flow. "She drinks her RED wine dry not sweet"

Lovely singing here. I love the repurposing of the traditional tune.

We had a dropout on Song 9 of the A Capella 4 track. Post in there if you want to add a part! https://write.fawm.org/forums/2896
