Pay You Back

Liner Notes
Michael presented me with two proposals for a collaboration. I was interested in both, but only got to work on this one, which had lyrics ready to go at a time when I was getting a bit fed up with writing lyrics. The story invites the reader to fill its gaps with the reader's own imagination, and I did, settling on an interpretation before recording the song. I'm not telling you what it is though. That would foreclose on your own reading of the lyrics.
I did make some unrelated changes, mostly to make it easier to sing, but also to make the protagonist's memories more 'baseball and apple pie' in contrast to his actual feelings as he experienced these events. The words in the Lyrics section are as Michael wrote them. Michael also directed the arrangement through good feedback on my various versions, did the final tweak on the vocal balance.
@michael_010 says: "I got the idea to write a 'revenge-song'. First version of the lyrics consisted of verses and chorus. The epilogue was added later. It adds a surprising and mysterious end to the song that leaves you wondering. Reinder wrote and recorded the music and sang the vocals."
Lyrics
Pay you back
[chorus]
Let me
Pay you back
Let me
Pay you back
Let me
Have the courtesy
Of paying you back
[verse 1]]
Schoolboy Johnny was a bully
Always ready for attack
The day he set his eyes on me
Was the day my world turned black
[chorus]
Let me
Pay you back
Let me
Pay you back
Let me
Be so kind
To pay you back
[verse 2]
Peter ran a business
The first underpaid job I had
I worked all day and worked all night
He laid me off, then I went mad
[chorus]
Let me
Pay you back
Let me
Pay you back
Let me
Pay my dues
and pay you back
[verse 3]
Linda was my sweetheart
I gave her everything that I had
Then she ran off with Peter
And left me broke and sad
[prechorus]
Now that my life is almost over
I want to pay my dues
Revenge is such a sweet thing
And it is coming to you
[chorus]
Let me
Pay you back
Let me
Pay you back
Let me
Settle the score
And pay you back
[epilogue]
The sun shines brightly on this funeral day
Johnny's flowers on the coffin's head
Linda and Peter standing hand in hand
And many tears are shed
i like the way everything is wrapped up in the last verse. excellent production with music that expresses the march toward revenge, while the vocals are businesslike without affectation.
