Pennant Race

Liner Notes

My first year of FAWM had me collaborating with my dad, using his lyrics. He had never written lyrics before and I had never made up melodies and sang lead before. It was new for both of us and super fun! We both had a great time and look forward to February all these years later! Last year was the first FAWM where I was unable to write a song with my dad, because I had a nasty chest cold the whole month. I have successfully avoided illness this year and am working on (hopefully) a few songs with my dad's lyrics.

Baseball has been a big part of my life since I was little, cheering for Cincinnati's Big Red Machine. My folks have lived near Cleveland for years now and adopted that team. My mom even was a tour guide at the stadium for years. Cleveland is a great town and it is always great to see the Guardians do well.

I connected with this set, so here is a song for them! I used the Hammond organ because baseball stadium organists are awesome.

#electricpiano #hammondorgan #baseball

I used an electric piano patch on my midi keyboard, M-101 Hammond organ, Fender Jazz bass and Ludwig Hollywood drumkit.

Lyrics

This year I've got a feeling We're gonna send the Yankees reeling We'll start fast and not look back Our team is young and has no slack

On first we have a first year slammer With men on base he'll use the hammer Our outfield has a lot of speed And they will fill a great big need

To the pennant race To the pennant race we go!

Our pitching staff has some real good arms That will keep us without harm The bullpen has that lockdown look They are surely one for the books

And if this doesn't come to pass And there is no splendor in the grass We'll still give a great big cheer And do it all again next year

To the pennant race To the pennant race we go!

Oh, the pennant race To the pennant race we'll go!

This was fun and I love hearing the family connection. And...I had to go read about stadium organists. The music and vocals are a perfect fit for the lyrics.

To borrow an appropriate sporting metaphor, I think I can safely tell you that you two knocked this one out of the park. Lovely, catchy, and the ending is perfect!

@srcoops and I did a baseball song a few years ago! I was an Indians (now Guardians) fan from about 72-79 and then a Reds fan from 80 on when we moved from Cleveland to Cincinnati. I still root for the Guardians, too. Delightful collab! Sweet instruments, hopeful spring-is-in-the-air lyrics. Love it!

This is fun. I can't say I'm a sports fan, but I can certainly hear in these lyrics your shared love of baseball and your home team. These fine words show the depth of knowledge about your team. I hope they do well, and I hope you both enjoy this baseball season. This is a really nice, happy melody and musical arrangement. I enjoyed it a lot. Go Guardians!

Well done! Folks, this was an all-star 2nd baseman who would rather play down at the creek. Mom liked it veery much, too!

Possibly because I adore each beautiful connection on game but especially one with family I know and have so much love for musically and more importantly as human beings . John , I know you sometimes disparage your vocals but they are bloody classic . This song is completely unexpected with the progressions but img works so beautiful with Mr C’s lyrics . Now I need some help . There are a few baseball terms in there that us English folk would love to know but are too stuck on cricket !! Anyway guys thank you for melting my heart this morning and John let’s get more vocals from you 🤩🤩❤️

Well Tito is in Cincy, so perhaps they’ll have a better season than last year. CLE is all about the pitching and hopefully they’ll stay healthy.

Oh the song… Fun lyrics and the feel makes you thin you’re at the park. I like the organ riffs.

This is adorable. I can smell the grass. Or maybe it's just astroturf. Love the electric piano and organ in this.

Nice work with the feel and vocals and instrumentation. I admire "complete sounds" like this - I'm just beginning to learn how to do it. I'm from Cleveland and Toledo originally. :)
