Just Bad Enough

I'm getting to the point where, when asked how it's going, rather than saying "not too bad" I go with "just bad enough."
This one started with the bass part, played on the fretless 2-string cigar box bass I built in January, then I added some 3-string cigar box guitar and fleshed it out from there. The words came last. I don't remember where I saw "ultimately you become the thing that would have saved you the time that no one did," but it's been in my song idea notes for a while and I thought it fit with this composition.
Lyrics
I left Laramie mid-April twenty years ago In search of greener pastures Since then I’ve been content to reap the seeds I’ve sown: Mixed metaphors and calm disasters
Nothing worthwhile comes too easy But the hard won’t make it good If the bad’s just bad enough You might wind up right where you should
Count the passing cars all day with only one hand And more fingers than you need The sense of isolation is only amplified When you leave behind the one thing that you can’t grieve
Nothing worthwhile comes too easy Are the good times in the past? If the bad’s just bad enough Then the bad times never last
Again, again, you take the same path hoping that you’ll find A different ending but you know you never will Tell yourself you’ve almost made it, just a bit to go It’s just over the next hill
You think you’ve got it planned out Right before you go into the skid Ultimately you become what would have saved you The time that no one did

love this! my hands are way too shaky to work with fretless/slide stuff but you do great work with it. it suits the arrangement perfectly and the vocal delivery with the lyrics and super-reverberated solo makes this a damn good country thing. very very nice.
I really really like this concept, and the last two lines are the kicker for me. You are your own hero when things get bad. But not too bad, only bad enough.
