Ask of the Earth

Liner Notes

So, this past summer, I was gifted a gorgeous 15th century viol, a student-level model of the one used by St. Catherine De Vigri. So, my challenge for myself this FAWM was to write something with it. My own version of the #oraclechallenge is what followed - I drew 4 Ogham cards, and wrote lyrics around that.

I don't do demos almost ever, and this is the first time I've managed to sing and play any instrument at the same time (and the first song I've ever played on this particular instrument), so I hate how this sounds but here we are.

Lyrics

Ask of the Earth, Ask the wind and sky Ask of the trees that grow Ask of the sea Ask the sun and moon Ask what your days will show

Guidance in turmoil, clearing your path Proof that can ease your mind Stern words of caution, steering from wrath Choices that break or bind

Will you find solace, will you find love, Will all your dreams come true? Will you be blessed by stars up above Will life be cruel to you?

Chorus

Yew for the cycle, death into life New grows from end of old Wisdom unending, answers divined Thus all old tales are told

Alder for safety, magic denied Aid offered, swift and sure Shield for your battles, bridge for your stride Healing so strength endures

Chorus

Spindle for sweetness, golden and fine Flash of your joy glows bright Fruits of your labor, vict’ry divine Spinning your heartsong tight

Blackthorn for changes, not to ignore Winter of cold and strife Weather the turmoil, mercy implore Growth that can strengthen life

Chorus

Beautiful, olden sound—there’s a solemn, haunting quality to this. It sounds sacred, magical. Nice witchy song. Very fitting for a 15th century instrument! Nicely done. I’m so glad you made a demo.

Asking nature for guidance seems very wise. And I have learned a bit about those cards from your fine lyrics.
