The Sweet Sorrows
Liner Notes
#americana #rock #folkrock #poprock #retrorock Considered titling this, "You Can't Spell Romeo without Emo" but calmer heads prevailed. Sort of. Lot going on here theme-wise, let me know if it mostly works or not. Maybe one to take to the superfawmgroup 2 Johns & a Nancy with @nancyrost and @dasbinky.
Great excuse to relearn things I was supposed to have learned as an English major, and heck if I don't appreciate them more now. I didn't remember that the R & J story was well known before Willie S. told it again, hence the bridge.
Before I start making excuses about sloppy doubled vocals and such.... Never mind the recording choices, it gets the idea across. Thanks so much for listening. Fawm on!
Lyrics
Romeo’s band, The Sweet Sorrows Played The Factory one Thursday in June There was hardly anybody there Aside from a couple of Montagues
But his hair looked great, you can imagine it All skinny legs and layers of black
Rosaline stayed away Immune to his heart attack
Sometimes I forget that Capulet girl Who put the twopence in his arcade Was the little lord’s second chance At the family masquerade
The boy wonder, all darkness and spotlighted Confused about sleep versus death Marquis Morrissey on the mic, unrequited Then requited but out of breath
Sometimes I forget that Capulet girl Who put the twopence in his arcade Was the little lord’s second chance At the family masquerade
Bridge: Willie’s story was seven times told Late to the ball, but it never gets old
I usually recall the middle and the end Cousins and balconies Too proud houses, a coma and a kiss Two star-crossed destinies
Well the band couldn’t hold it together Without their number one It’s a story as old as the love song And a tale that will never be done
It’s then that I remember Juliet Inciting his fever pitch Was Romeo’s second bite at the thumb When she came along and flipped his switch
(outro, how do I end this thing, whoops, ok keep it)

Far more entertaining and informative than CliffsNotes. They could have just said cousins and balconies, job done. Love it!
I didn't know, either, that R&J was a known entity before Will. Thanks for the lesson. There's a hilarious Upstart Crow episode about the writing of Romeo and Juliet (they're all hilarious, actually - it's worth getting Britbox for), and this is a perfect companion to that. Fun stuff!
Oh, we should totally play this in 2JN! There's something so satisfying about an understated vocal with a distorted electric guitar. Favorite lines are the twopence and Marquis Morrissey, but they're all good. #englishmajorrock
This is brilliant, somehow simultaneously both sad and hilarious. Clever, playful lyrics – very cool.
Fantastic lyrics. Intriguing and very clever. Love that little bridge that pops out. I think the double vocals work really well. Really cool track.
This is very very cool, but I don't know about the second chance thing. I reckon she was the last in a loooong sequence...
Also, I honestly think you should not have let calmer heads talk you out of that potential title . . .
This is utterly charming! I love how you've so thoroughly told the R&J story in this context and style. and that chorus is killer. Too many amazing lines to call out, but among them are "I usually recall the middle and the end/ Cousins and balconies" and "Marquis Morrissey on the mic, unrequited." (followed by "Then requited but out of breath") I LOVE this song.
The resolves into the minor are a really nice touch. Harmonies are on point, vocal performance top notch. Lyrics are clever and make me want to try harder with my own, but I don’t think I can fake your wit 😂 It’s a bop for sure!
Really like the power pop vibe here. Reminds me of Tom Petty at some points
Rocking JX! What a great take. I'm not leaving great comments but I like what you've done here.
