Lyrics
THE GREAT DIVIDE
It began so quietly No clue no hint that I could see I guess we lost the tender touch Those brief affections mean so much But become casualties in the drift of days Hearts can be deceived believe it's all okay
Isn't it funny how these gulfs get so wide We find ourselves staring across the great divide Hearts become canyons can't seem to span them Or find a way down from the rim Soon we’re strangers on opposite sides Of the great divide
So easy for shared history To squander the mystery Lover's geography Becomes soulless cartography And though we never plan to stray We take it all for granted till it slips away
Isn't it funny how these gulfs get so wide We find ourselves staring across the great divide Hearts become canyons can't seem to span them Or find a way down from the rim Soon we’re strangers on opposite sides Of the great divide
Break
I don’t know if there’s a way
That we can see it all in time
But as the distance grows so does the ache
Between the great divide
Isn't it funny how these gulfs get so wide We find ourselves staring across the great divide Hearts become canyons can't seem to span them Or find a way down from the rim We’re just strangers on opposite sides Of the great divide We’re just strangers only strangers Just strangers on opposite sides Of the great divide Strangers on opposite sides Of the great divide

There's a lot of Gordon Lightfoot in this in the best way possible. I really like how you've used geography as the allegorical anchor of this. It really brings a sense of space and distance.
