While I was on work travel a few weeks ago, I had some long talks with the owner of the local coffeeshop. I told him I would have to leave the country to escape what's going on here. He told me that what has been happening makes him feel like the sibling I'm singing to in this song - the one on the other side of the wall, listening to the horror on the other side. Left behind. With the scars of all they had to witness.

This is my attempt to say farewell to those I'm leaving here. I'm sorry. I wish I could take us all, straight and gay, cis and trans, white and those of color, neurotypical and divergent. And I can't. I can only save me. But I won't forget the kindness there was before.

Lyrics

Farewell Jemma Kline

It’s late at night and Dad’s asleep; the moon is thin and low. His words today were menacing; it’s time for me to go. A toothbrush and some medicine, a change of clothes I find; I spare a thought for all of you, the ones I’ll leave behind.

Could you hear me? Could you hear beyond the wall? Muffled cries of suffering; Did you want to save us all?

We thought we were a family; I thought that I was safe, But it’s hard to eat at suppertime with poison on the plate. You saw my tears and bruises; you saw the bloody glove. You tried to give me comfort, held me close, said I was loved.

Could you hear me? Could you hear beyond the wall? Muffled cries of fear and suffering; Did you want to save us all?

Now don’t you worry; I will get away. Don’t you worry; I will find a place to stay. I know you hurt; You feel it too. All my bruises Are still echoing in you.

Could you hear me? Could you hear beyond the wall? Muffled cries of fear and suffering; Did you want to save us all? Did you want to save us all?

Powerful. When so many are willing to turn their backs on others, we need songs to send hope. Glad you are OK, and that you're voicing the concerns of others.

@andrea Please don't worry - I meant it in the bridge when I said I'll be okay. I have a plan, and resources. I am very much one of the lucky ones. But I did want to say that this is also the far-too-common story of an abused queer kid running away from home. I find that a very appropriate analogy for the times we are in. The Lorax's forest will not be the same once the Humming-Fish have left.

@andrea

Wow, this is very powerful. The pain is evident and the story very clear. My heart is breaking. Are you safe and well?

Yeah, I feel this. I don't have a way out, or I'd be gone. Good song. Sad subject. Peace be with you.
