I Want A Yo-Yo
by @analogj
Liner Notes
This is a song that was partly inspired by Kate Bush. I was listening to her live Before The Dawn album this week (on vinyl!). She uses "yo" or "yo-yo" in a number of her songs, from Running Up That Hill, to The Morning Fog, to Cloudbusting.
I started to think about writing a song about using a yo-yo, which turned into an 'I Want' song, typical of a song written for a character in musical theater. It certainly brings out the child in me. I hope it does for you, too.
I'm still dealing with the remnants of the flu, one after getting it. My upper register is a bit weak, so forgive me and enjoy!
Lyrics
Verse 1
I want a yo-yo I could sock it in my pocket And be ready to rock it and go-go It would go up and down And all the way around If I say so
Verse 2
I want a yo-yo And I don't mean to flog But I could do Walk The Dog if I want to I could also Skin the Cat And other tricks like that I'm quite fond of
Bridge 1
Watching the yo-yo Go up and down and around Is hypnotic and cool Something you don't learn in school That's no April Fool
(Instrumental)
Bridge 2
Watching a yo-yo In and out, and roundabout I'd show them the way So much like an aerial ballet What can I say?
Yeah, I want a yo-yo I could so fantasize Open other people's eyes if I want to If I could just hula hoop Doing a nice Lindy Loop I would tap shoe!
Yes, I want a yo-yo I want a yo-yo I want a yo-yo

I recently put in an order with a local music store and they tossed a free yoyo in as a thank you. As I sat there trying some old tricks my daughter came in fascinated by this pre-screen era toy I'd discovered. Suffice into say, it's her yoyo now. This song brings many of the feelings from that moment up. Simple but endlessly fun.
Lots of nice visual references in her. Particularly like the way-ballet rhyme here. Really nice piano piece. I could see this wafting across a crowded bar because of the melody, and then I'd wonder at the subject matter!
