A friend in an online singing group run by @zinglizh mentioned that people always send them his kids when it’s time to teach them to drive. I’ve been meaning to write a song about that. Not sure if it needs a chorus, also whether the partial repetition in the current last section is too heavy-handed.

Lyrics

I’m pretty good with toddlers and with teaching kids to drive Once their brains come disconnected, and they start telling lies

The parents bring ‘em to me when they don’t know what to do They all tell me I’ve got the knack and maybe it’s true

Depending on the kid I strap ‘em in or let ‘em take the wheel I talk to ‘em like a Mustang when she don’t like how the halter feels

We drive around in circles till they nod off or they get the hang And here’s the thing, they always will

Sooner or later, most kids say something deep With their hands at ten and two or mumbling in their sleep

I’ve seen a couple generations turn three and then fourteen I’m familiar with what stages come in between

They’ll come out the other side like their parents did before I’ve taught a couple generations and I’d like to teach one more

Cause I’m pretty good with toddlers and with I’ll keep teaching kids to drive til my brain comes disconnected, and I stop recognizing lies

Love the line "I’ve taught a couple generations and I’d like to teach one more" and the closing line. Such a nice piece! 👏

Very nicely put, Nancy :)

So playful. I would have wanted to write the music for this if I had found it sooner.

It's funny how the toddlers and the drivers are put side by side here. It creates a moment for the listener where I pictured a toddler driving class, haha

Favorite line was the "mumbling in their sleep" line.

Love it! Great theme. I especially loved "Sooner or later, most kids say something deep/With their hands at ten and two or mumbling in their sleep." Kids do come out with the most unexpectedly deep things sometimes.
