Hotel Carpet Quest (Steppenwolf Parody)
Liner Notes
In “real“ FAWM, I probably would not share a #parody, unless it was for a very specific reason. But this parody is a direct result of my joining FAWM — if I had not joined, I would not have discovered #filk music, and I would not have been invited to be the New Voices songwriting guest at the Ohio Valley Filk Festival (OVFF) last year.
I had so much fun, and I was also mesmerized by the trippy carpets that abounded in the hotel where the festival happened. I wrote the lyrics to this parody while waiting for my outgoing flight but had yet to add the chords and record a demo — until today.
My photo compilation of the carpets is at the end of the video.
Lyrics
I like to roam...yes, yes Room to room, away from home Ev’ry rug another Eldritch design Any shape from dreams is fine
Mad swirls, flat pile -- flowers do not grow this wild
CHORUS: Well, I don't know which one’s the best Why don't you come with me for a stroll On a hotel carpet quest I don't know which one’s the worst Why don't we rank them last to first There’s a chance our eyes won’t burst
Close your eyes, friend Look inside, friend Let the scribbles cleanse your brain
On warp and weft we sang and played And, oh, I wished that I could stay Alongside friends I made this year But someone come and take these rugs away
I looked around -- at least six fever dreams I found
CHORUS
Close your eyes, friend Look inside, friend Let the scribbles cleanse your brain
CHORUS

Ok hear me out. You should share more parodies.
Haha, thanks! I’ve only dipped a toe in the parody pond. Weirdly, most of my parodies have been Christmas themed. So far I’ve got this one, “Grandma Got Hungover With a Reindeer,” a “Santa Baby” that is about impeachment, a Christmas “Tree’s On Fire” (à la Johnny Cash), a take on “Second Hand Rose” that is about how Girl Scouts don’t get to do as much fun stuff as Boy Scouts, and a “Jolene” crossed with Eldritch Horror (not my idea, but I improved upon verses I found online).
A toe-tapper for sure!
Thank you for crossing out your reply! That made the comment even more fun!
Lovely tune, and you have a very soulful quality to your voice. Wait, this sounds familiar but I can't quite place it, some kind of travel theme? haha! I remember once going to a carpet cleaner with my parents our neighborhood. Then, many years later the building had been turned into a music/artist studio lock out, and I rented a room there sharing it with another band.
Thanks for listening! I am LOSING my voice and getting sick, which is practically a FAWM tradition for me now, apparently even with mini fawms. Booooooo but glad if I get a soulful quality out of it for a few days.
Well, what a delight this song is! And I think we have all seen those carpets at some point or another!
Well, thanks!
You're hella talented all around, but as @aeye says ...you should definitely share more parodies!
