Our Lady of the Perpetually Aggrieved

by @jonathanfuller

Liner Notes

I am not a particularly religious person, though I worked at a Catholic school for the better part of a decade. The atrocities being done openly in the name of Christianity are just so brazen and, dare I say, evil that a little poetic blasphemy is a small price to pay. #protest #political #singersongwriter #piano

Lyrics

Our Lady of the Perpetually Aggrieved May we leave to ever fester each indignity received May we do unto others before they do to us And always twist the knife with a smile

Our Lady of Immaculate Ennui May we marshal keyboard warriors against the bourgeoisie May we splinter ever further until there’s no one left And sacrifice our substance for style Laying prostrate at the altar of style

Our Father in the big house Hallowed be thy fame Give us this day our daily dread Lead us into temptation Deliver us to evil Thine is the kingdom Forever And ever

Our Lady of the Never-Bleeding Heart May we look for every reason just to tear the world apart May we keep a faithful roster of all who did us wrong And tend to every grudge 'til they bloom

Our Lady of Incapacitating Greed May we forge a tinpot century with our Apostate’s Creed May we lift up the powerful and trample the oppressed And wrap ourselves in blankets of gloom Sleeping under weighted blankets of gloom

Our Father in the big house Hallowed be thy fame Give us this day our daily dread Lead us into temptation Deliver us to evil Thine is the kingdom Forever And ever Ah well

Our Lady of the Perpetually Aggrieved May we leave to ever fester each indignity received May we do unto others before they do to us And always twist the knife with a smile

Oof, brilliant writing and take in the subject. Witty and scathing. Strong Elton John vibes, the moody melody reminds me of Madman Across the Water. Your vocals are solid, great range and dynamics and so much passion in the delivery. Amazing stuff!

OMG! This is fabulous! What a powerful, beautiful, and very stylish vocal. Great piano accompaniment too. Totally entertaining and catchy melody. I love this to bits!

This song scratches me right where I itch! I love that you're calling out the hypocrisy and using all the religious word play! Too many good ones to pick a favorite! And the bluesy/bouncy piano and vocal melody compliments the way you're calling out the hypocrisy in the song. It always felt backwards to me to use Christianity to justify hate and discrimination and cutting safety nets, and lately they seem to be forgetting the whole "love thy neighbor" of it all.

This kicks so much ass. Love the harmonies. Love the vocals. And the lyrics are so good.

Okay, I'm obsessed with this. That bluesy piano! The fabulous vocal! And a lyric with too many great lines to even begin picking favorites.

Came here from the recommendations thread, and boy was that a well earned recommendation. The inversion in the lyric is delightful but I'm really all in on the piano work. That's some sweet strutting right there. Props for the inventive BVs too. A great listen end to end.

Stellar! Not the subject matter that inspired the song - that's very bad. But the song's handling of it is perfection. Lots to cover here:

I'm floored by the writing. I'm trying to pick out a favorite line, but each one is so good. The variations on our lady of XXX are absolutely great, but I think that "may we forge a tinpot century with our Apostate's Creed" is the one that sticks with me most.

Musically, just holy hell man. This is a masterclass. The rhythm, the melody, the VOCALS. I'll be right back... I've got a watch button to find.

You wrote that lyric just for me, I think. I definitely couldn't pass that title. And you totally nailed it. I could go into detail, but that lyric is perfect. Great song, too. Hopefully a future classic. Have you read The Violent Take It by Force? Or The Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory? Riveting reads about the sort of Christianity you sing about so powerfully

I’m angry about the use of Christianity to justify horrible actions and your song cleverly calls it out. I especially liked the twisting of the Lord’s Prayer and the lines “hallowed be thy fame” and “give us this day our daily dread” along with the “ah well” instead of “amen.”

Brilliant! I can relate to this so much. Such clever lyrics, and beautifully performed.
