Liner Notes

This seed of this tune started with the pre-chorus ("You're like a church I don't attend, where I never know when to say Amen"), a line that popped into my head during a wedding in which I was very confused. Why did everyone else know when to stand up? I don't know what to answer when the head dude utters things. Why are people looking at me angrily as I'm writing lyrics on my phone? Who are these people getting married?

Then I said, "Wait! I write things! That random lyric can be a metaphor!"

"A metaphor for what?", another voice in my head asked.

"None of your business," I deflected, but really I didn't know.

Do I know now? You decide!

Musically, I've been interested in doing more "band arrangement" stuff when I do rawk music, so this is just bass, two guitars, drums and one vocal. No twelve extra tracks of overdubs. (Which is sad, because I love overdubs as much as I love not being confused at church. And I don't go to church, so I'm chock full of overdubs normally.) And the guitars never play the same thing, because that's what rawk bands should do. Don't have a distinct part to play? Stop playing! Gah! Don't double the other guitar, play a counterpoint or something!

As result, this song is significantly too busy, since every instrument is trying to play its own competing melody or theme. Often in slightly different keys, just to keep it fun. Because rawk! Can't handle the EM11♯9sus2 chord I accidentally created in the verse? Go listen to VeggieTales, ya poser. (I have no idea whether VeggieTales uses EM11♯9sus2 chords, or metaphors for that matter.)

It occurs to me that my liner note rambling may not be adding any value to this song.

Ya how else this is a rawk song? Saying "yeah" and "uh huh". That's hard core. And a wanky solo! And having no dynamic range! We will win the loudness wars!

I hope you liked that solo. Gotta love E major.

Enjoy.

Lyrics

When I'm left to my own devices Where I go is no surprise, yeah A victim of the agony , the irony And the chemistry, uh huh

You're like a church I don't attend Where I never know when to say Amen

Breathe in deep Your taste it lingers Honey dripping From your fingers Reaching out To bring you near It only makes you disappear Pull out, fall back, detach You're an itch I can't scratch

Fantasies I can't retain Energy I can't sustain, uh huh uh uh Hang on your words like Holy Scripture But I'm just staring at your picture, yeah

You're like a church I don't attend Where I never know when to say Amen

Breathe in deep Your taste it lingers Honey dripping From your fingers

Reaching out To bring you near It only makes you disappear

Pull out, fall back, detach You're an itch I can't scratch

(face-melting solo) (continue only if face not melted)

You're like a church I don't attend Where I never know when to say Amen

Breathe in deep Your taste it lingers Honey dripping From your fingers

Reaching out To bring you near It only makes you disappear

Pull out, fall back, detach You're an itch I can't scratch

I love your quarters on the hats... It's your trademark.

I agree with Tfish, this is still classic you even without extra tracks. I actually like the clean vocals and they’re a good contrast to the overlapping guitars, which reminds me it doesn’t feel too busy to me!

Oooh, that crunchy lead guitar tone is lifting me up. Great job on the vocals here, powerful rock energy. The metaphors in the lyrics are great. Even without all the extra tracks, this is classic you, in a really good way. You melted my face!

Veggie Tales can’t exist without metaphor.

Even without the overdubs, this is pretty much peak Das Binky. And I include the liner notes in that, which I enjoyed reading very much. Isn't it great when a really strong couple of lines pops into your head? And these two are fantastic. Love the solo... natch. Damn, this is really good!

Holy crap what a fantastic write! Sticking to the metaphor all the way through and its a very unique take on it. Then there's the production... JAW ON FLOOR, ears drooling... Thanks for sharing 🙏
