That's Not Who I Am

Liner Notes
I wanted to get this out of my head this morning. It arrived as something of a cross between Warren Zevon and the daily news. Now I'm too depressed to sing it. (Maybe not so much depressed as simply uninspired.)
Oh well, onward and upward.
Lyrics
Sammy had it bad for the daughter next door Caught her alone one night Paid her pennies so the kinks he practiced Were never exposed to the light
Torn dress, black eye, called a sham Covered up by: That’s not who I am.
You can’t blame me; that’s not who I am Close your eyes, say you understand There are many millions out there who love old Sam And they sing with me, “That’s not who I am!”
Sam took a sledge to his neighbours’ car Turned it to a pile of junk Looted what he could from the glove compartment, Stole the spare from the broken trunk
Cops found him there with the hammer in his hand Nodded when he cried, “That’s not who I am.”
You can’t blame me; that’s not who I am Close your eyes, say you understand There are many millions out there who love old Sam And they sing with me, “That’s not who I am!”
How he got the bulldozer, I don’t know Took the house beside him down Now a few boards lie scattered on the walkway Beside a gaping hole in the ground
As he drove off, others pointed at Sam Who only pointed back, said, “That’s not who I am”
You can’t blame me; that’s not who I am Close your eyes, say you understand There are many millions out there who love old Sam And they sing with me, “That’s not who I am!”
Sammy bought a military rifle and shot The first dozen people he met ‘Cause he couldn’t think of a reason to refrain Hardly any have objected yet.
Bad stuff’s happened since the world began I’m not guilty, that’s not who I am
You can’t blame me; that’s not who I am Close your eyes, say you understand There are many millions out there who love old Sam And they sing with me, “That’s not who I am!”
You can’t blame me; that’s not who I am Close your eyes, say you understand There are many millions out there who love old Sam Who haven’t figured out that’s not who I am

Wooof. Heavy subject for sure. I do appreciate how unflinchingly you call it all out through the whole song. Powerful, but I can totally appreciate not wanting to sing it.
oooh with the right tune this could really cut like a knife
You've hit the nail on its head here!
