YOU MIGHT

Liner Notes

This #acousticonetake took me by surprise. I intended to have a drink and watch a movie but I glanced at a note from late January - the first two lines of this song. I thought I'd try a laidback 3 chord country ballad. After a few minutes of noodling on the guitar something else happened and the song started moving in a different direction.

Lyrics

‘YOU MIGHT’ You might stay with me Because I say I love you You might stay with me When I act as if I don't

Maybe it's because I'm a sweet talking man Maybe, maybe, maybe You're afraid there’s no escape From the walls I built around you No way to make a getaway

You might stay with me Because I hope you never leave You might stay with me 'Cos I couldn't live without you

Maybe it's because You think it will all get better Or cos I told you if I hurt myself It won't be on me, it will your fault And who could say I’m wrong And who could disagree

I’m not one of the good guys You know it and so do I From somewhere deep, A vestige of humanity Compels me to speak The last words I’ll ever say to you

‘It’s OK to walk away’

It's great when something arrives organically and heads off in a direction unexpected. Powerful and brave lyric, it's not easy to make the narrator the bad guy but this is corruscating. Great write, and I like the mood shifts too ✍️ 😊

Cool one taker and hangs together really well! I like the little unexpected twists that you pop in, like at the end of the 2nd verse and instrumental section. Strong lyrics too. 🙌

Yes, interesting choice of persona. You so rarely get songs from this kinda of perspective that at first you think your dealing with an unreliable narrator but actually it's a slow descent into coercive control like many of these situations are.

Very intriguing song. It caught me by surprise. I expected it to go one way and it didn't at all. The last verse was a real twist, too.
