Spoons
Liner Notes
This song will make a little more sense if you're familiar with "spoon theory." I recommend looking it up! I got this idea yesterday when I was putting away dishes and was reminded, once again, that we have more spoons than really fit in our silverware drawer.
Lyrics
I have so many literal spoons But not nearly enough metaphorical spoons I'm hanging on by a thread So much in the world right now fills me with dread And I can't help but wondering why The people in power don't care if we live or we die And I'm short on emotional spoons But I have so many literal spoons
They're breaching the bounds of their place in the drawer Some days I swear there are more than there were before When the dishes are done it feels out of control Where they all come from, nobody can know
I have so many literal spoons But not nearly enough metaphorical spoons I'm hanging on by a thread So much in the world right now fills me with dread And I can't help but wondering why The people in power don't care if we live or we die And I'm short on emotional spoons But I have so many literal spoons
The government's falling to fascists; the world is on fire The fight's just beginning, and I am already tired But I guess that's not true; we have been here before It's an uphill battle but I hope that we'll win the war
I have so many literal spoons But not nearly enough metaphorical spoons I'm hanging on by a thread So much in the world right now fills me with dread And I can't help but wondering why The people in power don't care if we live or we die And I'm short on emotional spoons But I have so many literal spoons I have so many literal spoons

This is SO real and aching and relatable. In addition, the rhythms mean that it reminds me of the songwriting style of a dear queer friend of mine in portland named billie jane. I say this as a compliment because I really like their songwriting, and I really like this song.
What a strange and tiring time we live in.
The lines "And I'm short on emotional spoons, But I have so many literal spoons" is clever. I can see how this was inspired while doing dishes!
Another wonderful song. I could listen to your voice all day. Really lovely stuff. Spoons!
Mmm, yes, spoons are in short supply. Those who know will know, as it were. Nice one.
Whew. This has been my winter too. The image works really well. Adding tangible limitations to ideas like strength and emotional reserves.
This song could be my anthem for the past couple of months. Chef's Kiss
Hello husband! I just commented out loud to you in the car. Phrasing, words. You make an excellent point about the spoons, though, now that our dishwasher works again.
Love this! Gentle and rolling, and sad but still hopeful. I think it creates a sort of gravity around itself, grounding everything. Really amazing. Your vocal performance is so lovely! I think maybe a fairy is stealing my spoons and leaving them at your house....
I’m not sure what it says about us we have 4 spoon :-) not sure on the metaphorical ones! Got me thinking!
I could hear rich piano in my imagination under this one. (I don't actually play piano, so no collab forthcoming unfortunately, lol)
I like the idea that something small like too many spoons can feel overwhelming in these ABSOLUTELY OVERWHELMING TIMES. There is also a dark irony in "too many spoons" when fascists believe there's "too many [fill the blank]s."
Your lyrics are so spot on, emotional vocal delivery yeah really nice thne
Ah, so many of us in this spot right now, eh? This is so nicely phrased, and so nicely delivered. A real gem :)
a lovely fragile voice in all the right way. breaching the bounds of their place in the draw... lovely :)
Nice tune. Tender and thoughtful. "...the world is on fire, The fight's just beginning, and I'm already tired..." Feeling those lines.
Yessss a spoons theory song makes me so happy. Great choice for a song theme. Adore your voice and your gentle strumming.
A very relatable topic....for sure. Smooth singing almost like a lullaby so soothing ..great job.
