Fog in Chinatown ♥

by @intoyourlight

Liner Notes

I was going to work on something different yesterday evening. But when my fingers found the piano, I wrote that shuffling chord progression and from that, things kept moving on pretty fast. I guess I can't deny my roots - Steven Wilson and Tim Bowness are one of my favorite songwriters, especially when it comes to ballads, and you can hear that in this song. For the lyrics, I don't know where this image of Chinatown came from. Also, I was never in Seattle nor did I have a car crash. The words just came to me.

PS: The song is 6 Minutes long. I don't know where that glitch comes from, shifting between different lengths. Did I just crack the space-time continuum?!

Lyrics

I survived A car crash In Seattle Bright red lights In the rain

Shattered by the impact I saw little It was a concussed Storm of grey

I held onto you A life raft in the sea Saving the stranded Aspects of myself

Floating through Your bounded galaxy Five numb fingers Combing through my hair

And the smell Of gasoline

It must be A part of me So brittle That keeps clinging To dark times in life

Come to me Oh dear friend of mine And forget about What has been

Swim with me Through this Red fog in Chinatown That swallows Every sound

And every Silent scream

Are we gonna put it back together? Are we gonna make it through?

I really enjoyed this. Loved the ambience - felt like rain and fog. Great build in the second half. Definitely radio-worthy!

Wow. I like the way the initial chords make me think of playing Chopsticks as a little kid with an intro piano book...A concussed storm of grey is an incredible image. There's this whole feeling of being upside down in a rainy car, as the jaws of life are grinding away outside the car...A whole life streaming down the window but in slow motion. Beautiful work...

I definitely hear SW in the lyrical style! I think this is a bit more romantic than his usual, which is perfect for the wonderful vocals and warm instruments. Nice job on the contrasting outro that still sounds like it belongs. Awesome stuff!

Mesmerized right from the beginning piano fourths. And what a glorious metaphor that Seattle car crash is. Love the outro as well. Well done!

This brings the drama. A keeper.

You did crack the space-time continuum with this beauty. The strings are gorgeous. Your voice is so warm here! I'm even getting Karen Carpenter vibes which is a supreme compliment. You're a lovely artist, songwriter, and musician. I enjoyed each unique one I've listened to this year!

I panicked when I saw 31 minutes 😂 Good to know it's just a glitch. I wondered if you wrote the piano or the lyrics first cause I get the Chinatown feeling just listening to the piano intervals. Your voice can fill the vastness because you have so much emotion here.

WOW! How come you're not yet on the radio? This is epic and sublime.

Wow!! That was so beautiful, I'm a big fan of minor chords, and everything about this song just fit together so nicely! And your voice is amazing! Really carries the emotion of the song! Amazing job!

Beautiful. I love how minimal and patient this feels. I've not got round to your other songs this year yet, but it feels like you've really refined your singing voice and mix, it's stunning. That vibrato is chef's kiss. I'm a big fan of the half-time beat with the double-tracked vocal, has that instant classic feel to it. Reminds me a lot of Lykke Li.

What a gorgeous vocal. Really felt it. Incredible dynamics, and your choice of instrumentation is sublime. Also, that piano motif is somewhat reminiscent of a Joe Hisaishi theme.

wow, what a song! great build up, especially liked every time you had backing vocals. The piano riff with its subtle oriental influence suited very well. Makes me think of 90s female singer songwriters, Tori Amos, Kate Bush... Just love it.

@sbs

As songwriters, we're storytellers so it can come from anywhere or be about anyone. Lovely, so very lovely! Btw, what's up with the time - it ended for me at about 6 minutes but it said it was 42 minutes long. Surely, that's some kind of glitch - lol!

The string patch was a perfect choice for this! Your voice is insanely compelling and wherever those ideas came from the delivery certainly feels like you had experienced what you are saying in the song and are telling it to the listener.
