Mi Amanecer

Jon says: Doug posted these lyrics about four days ago. I liked them, and asked to set them to music. I try to do at least one Spanish song every year.
I wrote this on guitar, but Mr Collie was singing along so loudly that I switched to piano (inside Logic) for the recording. I hope it catches the romanticism anyway!
I like how Doug worked in the 'ser / estar' "grammar lesson" as an integral part of the song: I'm happy to be (here) I'm happy to be (who I am) Because you are my first light / dawn / new day.
Doug: Muchas gracias, Jon! This is very sweet and very romantic, capturing the essence of the lyrics. I have long felt you can talk about love in Spanish in a way that doesn't quite work in English and you've done a wonderful job here. I'm so glad you picked this up.
Lyrics
Días lentos Sin amor No había agua Para la flor Noches largas Y oscuras Me faltaba Tu ternura
ESTRIBILLO (Chorus) Me alegra estar Me alegra ser Porque eres tú Mi amanecer
Rios frios Cielo muerto Ninguna rosa Se habia abierto
ESTRIBILLO
PUENTE En la cama de madrugada Me sonríes tú, me sonríes tú Es el momento, el momento Cuando más quiero tu luz
ESTRIBILLO

The piano works great (I'm sure the guitar version would be great also). Very sweet song.
Love this! There is indeed a romanticism to the Spanish language that can’t be captured another way. With Jon’s warm and gritty vocals, this setting feels timeless. La letra de la puente es mi favorita ❤️
The piano sounds awesome! So crisp and clear. Gorgeous lyric. Buen trabajo :)
Such longing in the bridge, missing the smile and light. The music and emotive vocal really bring out this melancholy write. Love the flower images. Beautifully sad song, great collab!
Beautifully done John! My Spanish is Dodgy at best but it actually didn’t matter, piano ended up being an excellent choice in my opinion! Thoroughly enjoyable.
It sounds absolutely loving and gentle, and the layered vocals coming in add an extra dimension. AND of course I fed in to the translator. Things get lost in translation, I know, but it came out even more tender and loving. A delight to listen to. Thank you both.
Oh, this is so tender and beautiful. The lyrics are very romantic without toppling over into cheesy territory. And the piano sounds great, a guitar version would surely be sweet as well - whatever instrument you choose, the singing is absolutely gorgeous, especially with the additional vocals in the chorus.
