Summertime (4 funerals and a wedding)

by @tspoon

Liner Notes

#folk #acoustic Last summer we had a lot of deaths in the extended family. We attended 4 funerals, and 1 wedding between May and September. It was a bizarre thing to have so many deaths in such a short time. Some were quite elderly and not totally unexpected. Some were more young and heartbreaking. It was strange to keep seeing the same extended family members at these occasions. We all kept saying, "What a summer, right?" I thought about how sad it was that a usual happy season, had so much sadness. So this is about last summer.

Lyrics

Summertime was here everybody cheered Looking for the sun and beer Yeah summer here we come, winter blues on the run

When we were Young, and summertime would come, Wed celebrate the fun, we’ stay out in the sun, school year is done Yea Summer, oh summer

That Summer year, the news brought tears didn’t ever get much better That summertime .... the weeks dragged on how could this be I’m wondering? In summer Yea Summer, oh summer

That Summertime It really hit us hard We hardly had the time no picnics in the yard, that Summer time was hard That summer

That Summertime we lost a lot of lights The sorrow and the strife lost brothers and lost wives that summertime

No more, no more cant take it any more God knows we need a break was more than we can take that Summer took the cake

Spring came early, its time to celebrate startin to feel great summertime is late That Summertime is here Hope Summers good this year

This is all too relatable! I really like the rhythmic lines then echoed back to That Summer.

I dig this one a lot!

I hope your summer is going this year

This is a very frank and beautiful song that reminds us that we can't predict or schedule the tragedies in our lives but, also a reminder that people gathering together can help bring each other the strength to cope.

You made a good song out of all of the grief, just like you did earlier with the song about your nephew. I can't imagine how dark those times must have been. Yes, let's hope for a much brighter summer for you this year. Echoing the previous comment, I do think you could work this up more and really make it come alive. It has a really hooky/meditative chorus that really grounds the verses and prevents the song from becoming a dirge. Another one for the ever-expanding tspoon box set.

In this eternal insufferable winter… I am hoping for the summer as well. The long days but this song rings true as going on 2 years ago I lost my mom in June. It now has become bitter sweet. I sense this kind of bitter sweet sentiment in this song. Is it about life’s journey and “summer” is metaphorical? That’s what I feel from it. It’s a good dine that deserves a more produced version. Props!!!
