Close Calls

Liner Notes
Nothing like open heart surgery or devastating wildfires to call attention to the need for some do or die New Year's resolutions. No time like the present!
While making my annual sojourn to the south lands in Dec/Jan, my dear eldest brother was able to avoid a major heart attack with a quadruple bypass. The very same day of his surgery, the L.A. wildfires blew up into an inferno. We were safe from the fires but we did experience the insane winds and felt the realness of that destruction while simultaneously embracing and supporting one another through a hell of a start to the new year. This song is kinda of about that, but it's a bit less intense than these liner notes. I sought refuge in my parent's backyard which has known me for a very long time and we've gone through all sorts of changes together. Need to work out the melodies and the phrasing a bit but I can hear some nice harmonies on this one.
Lyrics
I feel the warmth of the red red bricks As I watch the ants move along Through the fallen fruit and thorns and leaves on the ground
A lazy breeze rolls on by Accompanied by the deepest sigh And a wind chime lullaby
Close calls and second chances You better pay attention and learn your lesson Cuz you might not be so lucky next time
Here in this backyard, with the ghosts of trees past I watch the hummingbirds fly with their hollow bones So gorgeous in flight
I spent hours wishing this grass was a swimming pool Those hot summer days filled with roller skates and tap shoes
Close calls and second chances You better pay attention and learn your lesson Cuz you might not be so lucky next time
When those winds kicked up All your memories went flying Everything started burning up and you heart felt like it was dying
All these signs telling you to wake up Wake up before it's too late You better pay attention and learn your lesson Cuz you might not be so lucky next time
Close calls and second chances You better pay attention and learn your lesson Cuz you might not be so lucky next time.

@jackketch Thanks!!!! My brother is well and he even went back to work today. I'm hoping he learned his lesson! Sea shanty coming soon! I will be leaving more comments on your fine songs once I get through this week!
Well your start of the year sounded awful but I’m glad that a good little song came out of it. I really enjoyed listening to this, the chord progression and melody was great, I really like your voice, and I loved the sentiment of the song. Hope your brother is ok now. Also - thanks for all of the nice comments on my songs. Please do write a sea shanty, I want to hear it!
This is great! The vocals and guitar sound awesome! I really like that strum pattern. Glad to hear your brother and family are ok! And you got a sweet song out of it!
I like the sentiment and the chorus a lot. I'm in Northern California. Been evacuated only once, and had relatives in the South get burned out. And it's just as you write, all those memories went flying. You captured the feeling perfectly.
