Liner Notes

I wrote this song as I considered our world's future. Unmitigated expansion can destroy our environment if not properly addressed. I can get overwhelmed by this reality, but intentional collective action can make a difference. This is a challenge for myself to take action and seek community in that action. #personwithpiano #environmentalism #political

Lyrics

One day we'll find the last tree Standing still alone it waits for me It's shade enough just for its tiny plot Of healthy earth it's planted in its spot The last songbird will nest in branch along Silent now for no one's song Among its roots lays the very last hare Rests without any prancing for it's bare

How is this the present that I see How did this become the final tree Search my mind for history How we want the world to be Maybe not so long, someone comes along Plants a tree again, saves the world but then That person just isn't me

Circling the tree sprawl our roads most high Glorious towers hide the sun and sky Our precious cars choke the air we've flown But at least we've made the world our own

How is this the present that I see How did this become the final tree Search my mind for history How we want the world to be Maybe not so long, someone comes along Plants a tree again, saves the world but then That person just isn't me

Every year we thought we'd learn from the past We'd fix the problems from the last But then we'd grow and build just without heed Of where our choices, where they would lead

How is this the present that I see How did this become the final tree Search my mind for history How we want the world to be Maybe not so long, someone comes along Plants a tree again, saves the world but then That person just isn't me That person, could it be me That person, could you join with me

Wow! Great piano playing. I like the chord changes in the chorus - interesting and inventive. The last verse/bridge is a good transition to the final chorus and it's more hopeful sense. Great song!
