The Music of Samuel
by @cmharwood89
Liner Notes
This was a fairly short write, but I went over it a few times to make sure I felt okay about it, and that it didn't become a caricature.
There is a man who lives near me who is known around town by a single-syllable name (not Sam, but along those lines). He's a mainstay in downtown foot traffic and the public transit. I've spoken to him a few times, he always says hello to my dog on walks, and he attended a couple of my band's shows.
But what he is known for is the stack of classical music that he carries with him everywhere. Any moment he isn't on the move, he is avidly reading the compositions of Mozart, Chopin, Beethoven, and the like, and he'll be playing their music in the air with his free hand. He seems to perceive music in everything. I've never seen a person more compelled by beautiful sounds than he is, and it comes out in some strange - sometimes challenging ways (e.g. the first verse).
I wanted to write about that; about his music, but I didn't want to do so in a way that was exploitative. He clearly has some mental health struggles, and they aren't mine to write about.
So this is inspired by "Sam," but isn't about him. And if you read/listen to it and think that it rubs as being disrespectful, please let me know. I was really on the fence about whether this was one to share.
Voice is a little rough today with the dry weather. Single take with my Tascam recorder on my Guild acoustic. Capo challenge because I transposed it up from C to D#. Time to take that head voice for a spin.
Lyrics
Sam went for a walk on a rainy day A little water in his shoes never got in his way He's miming piano on the lawn, with nothing but his skivvies on ‘Cos the music in his head demands to be played
Oooh
He carries a book of concerts that he reads There are elements of Mozart in all he sees In a leather jacket and high-topped shoes he'll wave at those who look right through But Sam conducts a chorus in the trees
Oooh
A bus-window tour of this midwest town leaves him space enough for the world's sounds. He's dancing in the aisle to unheard strains
He meets your eyes with distracted stares; Run fingers through his flyaway hair And ask if you appreciate Camille Saint-Saëns
People keep on moving through Samuel's frame And no one even knows if that's his name…
He's waiting at the bus stop for the west bound line Two stops later he walks eastward making double time All the while he's humming low, and if you cross his path his smile is slow But wide and bright and filled with the gift of time
Ooh
Sam's standing on the corner in the bitter cold The transit canceled hours ago but no one told He's not bothered by the sleet or snow, while his fingers dance a Glissando Sheet concertos gathered in soggy rolls.
Chorus
Sam went for a walk on a rainy day A little water in his shoes won't get in his way He's miming piano on the lawn, with nothing but his skivvies on 'Cos the music in his head asked to be played

excellent character portrait. you bring Sam to vivid life, avoiding caricature. your voice is clear, pleasing and i like your phrasing. simple chords and strumming is perfect for the long, lyrical lines.
Wow, this really touched me. What an incredible portrait of a fascinating character. I think you've beautifully honored him and his unique way of living with this creation of yours.
Thanks for sharing. I wouldn't worry about this song being disrespectful as you do a great a job of painting it with beauty, and with a tenderness that paints Samuel as human. My favorite line is "people keep on moving through Samuel's frame / and no one even knows if that's his name..." wow, great job there. Beautiful tone and vocals, and the theme is beyond intriguing.
This a kind and beautiful portrait. Your heart is in the right place to consider how this could be diminishing, but because your heart is in the right place, it is absolutely not. It's a reminder of our shared humanity, and to look more lovingly at the people around us.
Such rich, emotive vocals - and the arc of the chorus is outstanding; it's such a tribute to Sam; the listener immediately understands this deeply complex situation. This song is so beautiful and artfully delivered that it seems like it should be on the radio. This is where great lyrics, great melody, and great musicianship intersect.
I really enjoyed this immensely. It’s funny that you say this a “fairly short write”. I wish I could write with such flow and perfect storytelling. You really bring Sam to life in this song to a complete stranger. It’s beautiful. You have a great voice and I really enjoyed your lyrics. Love the inspiration behind this. Nice song!
Gosh I love your voice! The guitar quality is beautiful too. I think if you want to be super carful in terms of being respectful the line about him being in his skivvies might want to be looked at? There is also something about the word that sounds harsh on the ears compared to the rest of the lyrics if that makes sense? But overall as a concept I think it's beautiful , I think you have made someone who I imagine is often ignored to be really seen through your music and there is nothing disrespectful about that.
The last 2 lines of the chorus break my heart, it's beautiful
First of all - beautiful voice! Great storytelling, and I like the change on the chorus. I think this would sound good with some piano added. Nice work.
Love the tenderness and care in the guitar and voice here, telling this beautiful, visual, bittersweet tale. Amazing song!
That's definitely a keeper! If you want to go a little beyond the sparse arrangement, I think some subtle strings would fit well, but it's great as it is.
Really nice heavy progression to open this. Lovely vocal take. What a sad picture, and a lovely take; playing imaginary songs in the lawn. I think stripped down was the right choice here. Beautiful, melancholic, caring and careful take here. I'm glad I listened to this.
Wow, the tones on this from the guitar and from your voice are just sublime. The lyrics and back-story as well - this is very strong. It carries a ton of emotion and weaves a beautiful story. Completely wonderful. I completely agree with Aubrey. It feels very genuine and caring to me. Lovely.
This is gorgeous, and I don't feel like the treatment is disrespectful? From my side of the speakers, it feels like it's got a lot of sympathy and tenderness. Great tune for sure.
Came across this via the Recommendations thread and it's damn good. Excellent writing and singing.
