The Wrong Right

Liner Notes

John says: It's always fun finding Liz's words. :) The original is here: https://write.fawm.org/songs/313994

I was in the mood to do something political, and in the mood to do some metal. The metal part is easy. The words part is less fun for me on the political front, since I have a bad combo of both focusing heavily on the dark dark end of the negative and escalating from 0 to 100 VERY QUICKLY. (Case in point: the last track on my most recent album was "Let's Burn the White House Down".) I don't need the Secret Service knocking down the door this FAWM.

As I note every time I work with Liz's lyrics (and this is probably the 4th or 5th time?), she works in a totally different vernacular than I do. I'd never write these lyrics, but the message and the cadence fit right into what I was looking to do, especially in the chorus. I only changed half a line to make the rhythm fit better. This is one of things where we both probably think of it as an easy collab since the other person did all the work. :)

Musically, I expect a cease and desist from 1980's-era Lars Ulrich by sundown. It's fun to aggressively downpick, triple-track guitars, sextuple-track backing vocals, reverse some harmony parts, and bust out the wah now and then. What's FAWM for if not a little overkill? Offseason, this would have had a 3 minute long instrumental bridge with Phrygian overtones, but I don't have time for that now.

Liz says: Holy Moly Super Edgy Driving Metal Superstar @dasbinky! This is totally awesome! It sound just a wee bit different than how I created it with my ukulele in hand. The driving beat with strong kick and scorching hot guitars with your crazy good metal vocals amaze me! I have no idea how you do all this and do it so quickly and so well. I am honored and humbled to share this song with you. And I can’t express how cool it is to be Medicare age AND a heavy metal song writer!!!! Thanks so much, John, for your time and talent! #metal #political

Lyrics

V1 nuanced shades of gray color perspectives and thoughts in ways that we together honor truth

subtle hues of days shadow boundaries and lines in ways that we together respect views

PC different lines of sight can shape all we do black and white divides me and you…

C the wrong right… will provoke deadly fights the wrong right… will work to incite and divide the wrong right… will steal our hope and light the wrong right will haunt me…

haunt me again tonight…

V2 diverse tones of skin Show our histories and pasts in ways that we together can’t ignore

varied beliefs of sin impact compassion and love in ways that we together can explore

PC different walks of life can guide all we do but black and white divides me and you…

C the wrong right… will provoke deadly fights the wrong right… will work to incite and divide the wrong right… will steal our hope and light the wrong right will haunt me…

haunt me again tonight…

Shit, those "the wrong right"s are terrifying in the best possible way. Like an army. This is an amazing collab! Serious metal and great lyrics.

Cease and desist from Lars? Like for the drums? I mean he'd have to be a drummer!

Love the crunch and pinch of the guitars.

This has got to be my favorite collab of this FAWM! I love the juxtaposition between the lyrics and arrangement, it's absolute perfection and brings me a job I cannot express. One of the things I love about Liz's lyrics is that she tries to see the good in things and has a wonderful perspective on life in general, to have that turned into a metal song is wonderful!

Love this mashup. The overlap in the chorus feels perfect in its evil sounding repetition. Amazing guitar! Well done both of you!

@emplate

Yeah, well, I definitely hear Metallica here, especially Hetfield in the voice! :D Great, groovy riffs. The chorus is very powerful, and it's underlined by how excellent of a tagline the song title is!

Now this is a fist pumper!!! The “the wrong right “ refrains really drive the point home like a Sherman tank. This ran over me like a train in a good way. Really kickass work.

Lars on the phone? Nah, i reckong you're more in trouble with John Bush-era Anthrax. Particularly that chorus. Can't you just hear Scott Ian yelling "the wrong right"? But picking over whether it's paying homage to 80s West Coast or 90s East coast thrash isn't really the point. What DOES matter is that this is a bloody good tellinging of some very sharp words. Pounding in all the right places. Top work, the both of you!

I love a good double-kick-pedal pounding over "nuanced shades of gray" and "subtle hues of days". But seriously, this is so perfect for the chorus, and for these times. Outstanding performance!

Wow, I've never heard Liz' lyrics set to metal, as they are usually filter through my folk-heavy mind, but this works amazingly well. I especially love the chorus with the seemingly two voices trading back and forth. Guitars are shredding too! Top notch here.
