14. Ouroboros

2nd last track for this big ole project that's taken a year (more really, considering the birth of some lyrics) to hammer down! I like to see songs as chapters in a story, and so while we're beginning to wind down, this thing has some references to other songs, namely another out of place song from the first album in this trilogy called Cynical Kids: https://soundcloud.com/brandon-brooks-746737217/cynical-kids
I'm not going to link and explain all the connections, but as I wrote out the template for these albums I saw it as a big, endless loop, and, well, I couldn't help but relate that to my own head and mental health.
The song is dark, a little (vaguely) political, nostalgic, and predictably sad. I think it's short and (bitter)sweet, teeing up a final song that brings it all back around.
Lyrics
Like a broken record, baby, I'm in a rhythm with the doldrums. I found a way to take the same sad song And sing it Over and over and Over and over.
Verse 1: We sure as shit were never taught How to shed our skin, Fed lies in Novacaine and Sudafed.
Late bloomers to A world that already is And always has been.
Forever bonded to Potential beyond our reach, Locking us down With imposter syndrome in our heads.
Melatonin in the muscle Beneath our skin, Or something like it.
Pre-Chorus 1: I never wanna repeat myself But I gotta say... Over again.... Like a broken record, baby.
Verse 2: Commit to something that is Bigger than just yourself, But nothing bigger than the Powers that wannabe.
Convince yourself that Things are better when they're unseen, If they're unsightly.
Repeat the mantra that's Been given since the fire was lit, "Swallow the tail and Follow who you're following",
Or open up and see The world for what it is, When it's burning brightly.
Pre-C 2: I never wanna repeat myself, But I gotta say; These are the nights, But those were the days...
Chorus: Like a broken record, baby, I'm in a rhythm with the doldrums. I found a way to take the same sad song And sing it Over and over and Over and over.
Like a broken record, baby, I'm in a rhythm with the doldrums.

Oh this is delicious. I love the transition into the full production, and I find the rhythm and delivery of the vocals to be kind of seductive! The chorus is great and I really love the lyrics, in that section especially.
The transition from acapella to sultry groove is so, so cool! And the relationship between the words and the title (while not using it in the song) is so well-done. Awesome song!
i also see each song as a chapter in a story. and that story is the album. im looking forward to your album, when all these chapters are in the proper order. what i like most about this song is the way it moves and how the vocals seem to make circles around the music.
This is delicious, filled with so much creative imagery! The first verse hit like a truck (that sudafed and novacaine line is soooo good). You've captured the cycle so freaking well. Absolutely loving your vocals here! The vinyl skip/replay effect is such a nice little detail. Awesome work!
Woah the production on this is nice. Funky talk-singing, solid rhythm section. That piano sound is intoxicating. Also, what!? - scream vocals!?? would not have called that, but it works so well here, very unexpectedly.
Great way to start a track, got me wondering whether it was going to remain acapella and really drew focus to the words. The production is great and the variety of vocal delivery kept my interest throughout. Sometimes I feel a bit like I'm writing the same song over and over again and I like the link ou make with the societal elements. The project sounds really interesting, cool song!
I love this groove. The layered vocals are amazing! And these are some seriously relatable lyrics and emotions. Depressed/angry/bitter/resigned is an emotional cocktail that has come back into my life more than once. Thank you for your encouraging words about my insomnia song! tit4tat
Cool, like a Broke-Broke-Broke-Broken Record! Nice melody, slick music, smooth vocals and a Strong Lyric with some unusual but Great Lines.
Interesting and engaging melody. I like the echoey vocal at times. This has a very smooth vibe. I like it a lot.
Nice production. Bass and drums sound really good. Smooth vocal.
I clicked the title because I was going to write a song with this title and wanted to see another perspective on it. You really expressed it well in these lyrics. The production and performance are both excellent. Great song here.
Yes, awesome start. You're vocal production (from arrangement - the harmonies, vamps, where to go falsetto - to the clearness and fullness of the vocals themselves) is top notch. Love the melodies in this one and I'm still singing "like a broken record baby, I'm in a rhythm with a doldrums... over and over" haha just properly stuck in my head. Love it!
Really spacy. Nice use of echo. cool lyrics. you got a definite groove space. Very nice.
The acapella open is so good, and then that groove comes washing over. Love the 808-kinda sub-bass, great vocal performance, little riffy breaks. This cooks.
"Melatonin in the muscle Beneath our skin, Or something like it."
Nice little Dead Or Alive callback too. Really enjoying this. Will probably be my last FAWM listen.
A good one to go out on.
