I Risked it All

Skirmish: 'I Risked it All' (@ragbag)

Liner Notes

When I read Liz's lyrics I found myself singing them to a tune. That's always a good sign in my book. So I grabbed my trusty Zoom H1n recorder and sang what I was hearign in my head into it.

I then contacted Liz to check it was OK that I put her words to music (with a few little changes for scansion, etc) and when I got the go ahead I recorded this.

Then we had a family crisis and I didn't get to post it until now. Crisis over - deadline met for my daughter's "Thesis Submission" (with 4 minutes to go on the clock just before midnight!

Liz says: As always, @berni1954 did a wonderful job bringing these words to life despite the detours and deadlines he speaks of! I love the flow of the melody with his uke backing! Perfectly captures the sentiment I was trying to express. Forever grateful for Berni’s gift of music!

These lyrics are beautiful, although the end made me sad. Berni's music is a lovely fit for the lyrics. It is both sweet and catchy. I enjoyed this very much :)

Love the various "sometimes" in the beginning, leading to the observations about love in the pre-chorus (and then the chorus framing how worthwhile it is to take that risk). The melody works well with they lyric (love the minor in the pre-chorus and the lift in the chorus, especially).

You've bought the words to life beautifully, the tune is soothing and I love how you've set the chorus I'm singing along to this. Great job!

You’ve crafted Liz’s words into a sweet hooky tune @berni1954. That chorus in particular is an ear worm. Great collab!

This is very sweet and so sing-able. I put this on right before I took a short drive and was humming harmonies after the first verse. Really enjoyed it!

These words are very much brought to life by that tenor uke, and it's a lovely fitting tune.

I should add (to what I said below) that Berni, your melody -- your melodies generally -- are solidly in the folk story-telling tradition that dresses words in simple, working person's clothing, that enhance the story and let the lyrics shine.

I totally sympathise with you facing whatever glitches caused a last-minute panic with a thesis deadline. Been there!

the mission statement of a diehard romantic. i love liz's all or nothing lyrics and bernie sings it as one who has been there as well.

"I risked it all" is a good title, but adding "and I'd risk it all again" makes it great. I especially like how the bridge nails that down with a metaphor. This song has a depth of passion that is rare in a world where life is all about minimising risk.
