Meryl Streep's accent in the 1988 film 'Evil Angels'
Liner Notes
Outside Australia the film's called 'A Cry in the Dark'. It's the tragedy of a woman dealing with the loss of her child and the hostility of a nation, and, if you're at all familiar with Aussie/Kiwi accents, the distracting comedy of an award-winning American actor fighting a losing battle with vowels.
Forgive me. It's the end of the month.

She should be frogmarched from Melbourne to Sydney as a punishment!
Great actress, but judging by this, maybe an Oz accent isn't the best she has in her repertoire. Not seen the film though.
Lol, that ending got me. This is gonna poison my diction for the next 24 hours. I feel like this is too good of a track to use for a comedy idea. The persistent build and rising melody of the brass is so uplifting. Seriously, this is a perfect epic set closer. I can imagine a full band bringing it to an epic crescendo.
Ha ha!!! This is brilliantly funny!!! Well done! Made me smile!
Bwahahahahahahahaha! Great job committing 100% to the bit.
honestly i bet meryl would get a kick out of this too 😂
When it sounds not great to my ears then you know it's not great. I couldn't help but smile throughout. The timing is great, especially in the repeated "talking about my..." Nicely played.
All smiles on this one. Joyous
Hilarious! Thanks for this. I needed a laugh. Very creative too, I must say.
It counts as one all the same. :-) My initial reaction was, "what the hell just happened?" On the other hand, it's a bit of genius for sure. Almost two minutes of lovely instrumental music accompanied by Meryl Streep. I mean, I've never heard THAT anywhere else. And I;m not sure I've ever heard anyone get that much mileage out of a single sample. Well played.
Ooo, this is giving me The Big Ship vibes, beautiful. Streep's accent might be a bit off, but my my, she has a great grasp of rhythm
It’s not a patch on Dick van Dyck’s cockney accent though. Or Audrey Hepburn’s……gawd blimey lub a duck
It’s a sad movie, and as a big fan of Meryl’s (and from the US), I thought she did a great job with the accent. But what do I know… except that this is brilliant!
Those toms are fucking lovely.
Not some objikt.
Saffers have this every time they get a yank in to do a Saffer accent. It is never correct, as well as, was there literally nobody local that could do the part?
Joyful, silly stuff. Thanks Mike, Im sat in the car outside a coffee shop at 5am catching up on comments, and this was a welcome burst of nonsense.
this made me laugh out loud!!!
maybe it’s the young millennial in me, but inane, bordering-on-absurdist shit like this gets me every time. standing ovation
This is without doubt the greatest film-related song I have ever heard, on FAWM or anywhere else. Nearly forty years on and Meryl's still game for silly accents too, at least as far as can be judged from her role in "Only Murders In The Building" season 3...
Wot are we tolking abewut? I luv me sumthing idiotig, ples and thank yu.
This is stupid, but I still liked it. Enough to give it a another spin after getting it over with.
oh dear I remember that, such a great and so terrible. a story forever in Australian folklore! everyone has an opinion! if you think she sounds aussie you have not met one!'
