Another one for the concept album/synthpop-rock opera...

This one has a really weird genesis. I was combing through my ideas spreadsheet the other day and came across something called 'Catchy pop riff tune, Oct 2024'. It wasn't a recording, but a DAW session. No idea what it was. Opened it up and there was this killer bassline, but nothing else. Just a two-bar bassline and it was awesome. Don't recall ever making it!

Not much to work with, then I remembered I had a hook I wrote for a song in FAWM 2017 that was amazing, but attached to a real piece of crap song. Like, possibly one of the worst things I'd ever written. Not a single redeeming feature, outside of that hook "give me something to hold on to so i don't fall of my chair as i drink my way through four years" (it was early 2017, it made sense at the time).

So I grabbed that hook, added it to the bassline and worked up a new song.

The demo perhaps has a bit too much going on all the time, it's just as much a demo of the arrangement as it is the song - eg the mix of vocoder and live vocal, the way the echo changes the year numbers, etc. The ideas are good, the execution needs a bit of polish, and maybe a bit of guitar.

Also, I did not realise this when I had the idea, but for some reason when the echoes 'five years' and 'six years' mix, they sound like 'seven years'. It's not a lyric mistake! It's actually 'six years' but it sounds like I say 'seven years' twice. I was pulling my hair out trying to work out what was wrong. It's an illusion (Michael).

Anyway. That's 41 songs and I no longer have any time with the house alone - this epic binge is about done. So if I make it to the magic 42, it's likely to be a skirmish or instrumental... or I might just play Civilization VII for the rest of February.
