Let Nothing Flourish

Liner Notes

VV: This riff evolved over a few days, it sounded like a Richard Dawson folky thing initially but then I tweaked the rhythm and it started sounding like something else, and then I recorded it with reverby electric guitars and it sounded like a big melancholy thing. And then I had to go out to the Legitimate Theatre so I threw the instrumental out into the ether and it landed on @thelowestbitter who has perfectly matched the vibe! Lovely way to close the month for me.

TLB: heard this and it seemed a good fit for some lyrics I'd had floating about for a while, basically the first verse. The second and third verse actually came pretty quick once I had music to write to, and I'm pretty pleased with this one lyrically. It's about Glasgow. I love Glasgow but not so much that I can't recognise its flaws and how badly the city has been managed in recent and not so recent years. Let Glasgow Flourish is the city motto which I've twisted here. Anyway, happy with how this turned out, thanks @vomvorton

PS I am aware "bursted" isn't a word, it's burst, but I needed the extra syllable, call it poetic license

Lyrics

green thumb on the scale, check the weight yellow hibiscus wilted in the shade there's a sickness comes up slowly from the soil overwatered, undernourished, I'm the same

a Capability Brown-field estate a bursted blister, drinking from the drain there's a sickness and it lives in all of us all defeated and discouraged, I'm the same

blue bin on the bonfire, eyes ablaze a hostile witness at the fireworks display there's a sickness, trickles down from high above the motto says, "Let Nothing Flourish" in the shade

A Big Melancholy Thing is probably my favorite genre, and you guys nail it here. That guitar sounds like a starry sky. I don't know what it all means, but every word feels true. This is beautiful. (A Big Melancholy Thing sounds like a fawm fake band name that should become an actual band name)

Very cool to hear Jeddy's voice over an indie guitar track. Those drum sounds are cool, I didn't even realise they were electronic until halfway through. They fit the style really well. That guitaring is top drawer, the melancholy brightness in those lines is Marr-beating. "a bursted blister, drinking from the drain" is my favourite line, but the delivery all the way through this works so well for the track. Really enjoyed this, so much in fact that I listened about 4 times in a row.

Ooof, y'all this is so gooooood!! Except, why isn't it 5 times longer??? I love everything about this -- the rolling guitar riff and reverby tone. And these lyrics and the vocal from @thelowestbitter are brilliant -- so bleak and rich at the same time -- and that "I'm the same" refrain is so good, and love how it evolves in the third verse.

This is a really soothing listen for all its melancholy. Gorgeous vibes.

I have never been to Glasgow but did study the city for GCSEs I think, and it sounds like not much has changed in the interveening years. Love the words, I mean they are a little bleak, but demonstrate the feeling of the song strongly. Love the synthwork in the break in vocals, really adds something different to the track, an interesting texture. I can also pick out the Richard Dawson starting point, love that guy! But if you hadn't said it, would I have noticed? Probably not, a lovely guitar line - cool tune guys!

@burr Mod

i am pro-"bursted." love the consistent color references and line 3s across the verses. woozy melancholy guitars and drum machines on point. i've been to glasgow once in summer 2011 and quite loved it.

That really is some lovely woozy guitar. The drums being way out front is really striking. Gives it a ‘lofi beats to dissociate to’ sensibility. Jed’s done a banging job with the vocals, delivering a battery of defeated images.

Can’t say how much I love that reverby guitar with the kind of bouncy rhythm and how the lyrics weave in and out of it. This is so great!

Wow, so good, the title caught my eye, but it pales in comparison to all the other elements of the song! Was very pleased to enjoy this! I love the vocal melody lines and the music sets a perfect atmosphere. Also love the tone of recorded vocals!

Was not what I was expecting with the lyrics, but you definitely nailed the vibe! Good job y’all!

The vocal effects really fit the feel. The bass'i-ness on the drums too. Super atmospheric. The "I'm the same" does a lot of work here, really cool.

I can't really break this down into parts, I just really enjoyed it. Compelling lyrics, great melody and the telephone EQing is a very nice touch. The guitar part is really great. The drums have the perfect lo-fi feel that's needed. Kudos, fellows.
