That's Just The Dark
Challenge: PERSONAL SOUNDTRACKLiner Notes
#blues #fingerpicking #sologuitar&vocal #soloelectric
I wrote these lyrics earlier in the week and revised them today. I tried them in open tuning with slide on the National and in standard tuning on the Martin before settling on loud amplified guitar bleeding straight into the vocal mic. Pretty sure I did the right thing. I'm lukewarm on a few of the lines but overall ok with this as long as the chorus makes sense in terms of the verses.
I suppose this could also qualify as a personal soundtrack – I'm not sure I'm feeling this positive but playing loud sometimes makes me feel better.
Lyrics
No time for beautiful gestures Or waiting for the paint to dry In these days of stormy weather And nights of trying to get by
But that’s just the dark That’s just the dark Trying to leave a mark, trying to take your spark That’s just the dark
Why bother singing these swan songs It feels shouting into the wind Scraping out a blue lament on a one-stringed violin
But that’s just the dark That’s just the dark Trying to leave a mark, trying to take your spark That’s just the dark
We could dig through all this rubble Find the stones to build anew Four walls to hold back all these troubles And tell a story that rings true
Cause that’s just the dark That’s just the dark Trying to leave a mark, trying to take your spark That’s just the dark

My friend and fellow singer-songwriter David LaMotte sings that "all the darkness in the world can’t extinguish the light of just one candle." His song is folky and sweet, but I rather like your bluesy dismissive growl about it. The spirit shines out of this one. Letting the amp get picked up by the vocal mic makes this demo magic, too -- feels like I'm a candlelit the room with you and the guitar tone has just the right bite to it to take away the chill.
Wow, a hopeful blues! I love it, the hook is so rhythmically satisfying, and it does help to be reminded that we aren’t the crazy ones.
Wow, what a catchy guitar! your bluesy lyrics are wonderful too.
Very catchy melody and lyric. Wow! That's some skill you have on the guitar. Fabulous instrumental blues melody lines. This one had my foot tapping the whole time. Love it!
Oooh…I really like your second and third verses. Favorite line has to be blue lament on a one-stringed violin. That’s brilliant. Always groove’n with that guitar of yours. Not certain if that’s the four chord you go on the second line of the verse but that lick to close out the line sits perfectly. Of course the bit you play after the second chorus hits the bullseye too.
Started a comment and then got called away -- it didn't post. I love the chorus! (love all the rhymes, and the rhythm, and the message). I think the verses work with the chorus, but the chorus is a keeper regardless. And the guitar playing is wonderful. I love hearing what you come up with every February.
Love that guitar - great playing and tone. Really well done one take and this recording method worked well. I really like how the vocal melody interacts with the guitar. Cool bluesy vibe, nice toe tapping beat, and quite a memorable melody. I also like the chorus - "Trying to leave a mark, trying to take your spark That’s just the dark" - such great lines.
Lovely lo-fi track. Rocks and bops along. Love the melody when it dips its toes outside of the blues. Really works. Well done.
