Make No Mistake

Liner Notes

#folk #folkrock #folkblues #iheartgregbrown Periodically I like to remind myself and those around me that the purveyors of advertisements, goods and services have pretty clear motives. Drums got weird a few times, maybe fix later, and maybe I ripped off a Greg Brown song that already exists? I don't know, it was 3 a.m. for Pete's sake! :) Fawm on!

Lyrics

Make no mistake (make no mistake) Make no mistake (make no mistake)

They’re not in it for the love They’re not in it for your health Don’t wanna do you right They’re in it for the sale, baby, sale, baby Sell, baby, sell

They’re not in it for the love You won’t find it there But you still want some And they still don’t care

They want to tell you what it looks like Tell you every day Push you down real low down So you’ll listen to what. They. Say.

Make no mistake (make no mistake) Make no mistake (make no mistake)

Things were going fine Or so you thought You didn’t think you could Think you could be bought

It’s all cake and games Out on the battlefield They use your eyes and ears, hopes and fears To give you all the feels

They want to give you a taste Say they know you well So they can sell you high, And buy you low, aw hell

Make no mistake (make no mistake) Make no mistake (make no mistake)

They want to show you what it looks like, Most every day Look into this carnival mirror till you can’t stay away

They got a million spies And you, you’re one... in a million Build a funhouse of lies doesn’t sound so fun

Make no mistake (make no mistake) Make no mistake (make no mistake)

they’ll open up that space the one deep inside, by your soul to try to get there first in that deep space race

You didn’t know you needed But now you need it more (more, more) Gonna head right down To the need it store

They got what you need They need what you got They need what you need, and your need Is mostly what they want They got what you need They need what you got They need what you need, and your need Is mostly what they want

Make no mistake (make no mistake) Make no mistake (make no mistake)

You’re gonna make mistakes (make no mistake) We all make mistakes (make no mistake) Try to identify (make no mistake) What motivates (make no mistake) They’re in it for the sale, baby, sale, baby Sell, baby, sell Sell, baby, sell, baby Sell, baby, sell, baby, sell

I'm starting to learn this, and it's going to be fun to play together!

I played this several times while out walking, and liked it more with each listen. (I liked it well enough the first time!) I like the detail of putting rhymes in the 'tags' or afterthoughs: 'well' with 'aw hell', 'store' with 'more, more'. Maybe another way to say it is that the unique attraction of the song is partly in how you find rhyme and structure in what sounds like a prose conversation with yourself. Using combinations of different voices emphasises the conversational nature of the song. The overall message is great, of course. And some of the lines are really smart, like 'deep space race' and 'the need it store'.

As a fan of Greg Brown.. I love this and agree that it has a bit of his spirit, however it is all YOU. As someone who hates ads (or any outside influence trying to control how I think/feel) this HITS. The interplay between the vocals is great, and the guitar work + drums lays the perfect foundation. Those harmonies at the end were an absolute joy :)

This hits on so many levels, from the perils of consumerism, to the perils of getting drawn into a cult (religious, political, or otherwise...) Why is it that we all have some gullibility, big or small, for something (mine is that inevitable impulse purchase at the checkout🫤)? And it's not just the spot-on lyrics, but the way you drive it all home with that rhythmic guitar, eerie, guttural delivery, and those spit-fire repetitions. Whoa!

Wow! I am singing along with this one. Tear down those walls! This so catchy, love those echoed responses. . 😎 I don't know if you remember, we did a Collab many years ago on a song called Batteries Not Included, I still use it regularly at open mics. Hope you don't mind if I add this one to the repertoire as well.
