MORSE CODE

Try writing a song with MORSE CODE! šŸ“”

Think "YYZ" (Rush) with its airport-code rhythm, or Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 intro (the basis of Morse code for "V").šŸ’”

Encode a message with rhythm (musical cryptogram anyone?) or use it as a hidden texture like "Planet Claire" (B-52s) or "Landing of the Daleks" (The Earthlings).

Bonus points for hidden messages! šŸ˜

There is a well-known example from Yes, in ā€œAnd You and I,ā€ I believe, where the bass guitar repeats two letters of Morse code.

I’m not going to make it a challenge entry because that would be cheating, but I made a track that fits the challenge for Jamuary:

The prompt was: ā€œBlack hole. What happens to the sound when it enters the unknown space?ā€œ

Curious if anyone has any ideas on how this could be a lyric challenge as well? šŸ¤”

@ally_nicole I have certainly heard songs that talk about people sending and receiving Morse code.

[avatar]

A real challenge since I mixed it with the History Project skirmish! The rhythm of the song is courtesy of a cassette of Morse code my grandfather made decades ago and left me.

@ally_nicole For example: spell a word in morsecode, than use the pattern of long and short pulses as the pattern of stressed / unstressed syllables in your verse meter.

hello folks,

i use morse code all the time in my music, so i couldn't resist this challenge!!

https://write.fawm.org/songs/308318

buried deep in the mix are two morse code patterns playing two separate ride cymbals --

left channel: "resident evil" right channel: "a secure place"

as to the track, it's a mashup of two "resident evil 2" tracks - "secure place (save room)" and "ada's theme". there are also nods to bjork's track "play dead" and the guitar work of the cure. i went for a motoric beat to hold things together, before fading out with a sample from a company called "Ethereal 2080" (ds_bitter_sweet_textured_piano_loop_80_dm_wet")

@tiller2

Let's not forget "Wichita Lineman," by Jimmy Webb, which has Morse code in the intro.

@cbmagic

I was in the military, and used more code to send messages. We used to have to encript it and thus placing them in music. So this is a trip down memory lane.

@esc4p3

I've given it a go, the prompt was great inspiration, thanks! https://write.fawm.org/songs/308793

@hmstreetteam @spotlightkid ok thanks for the suggestions! a lot to think about ;)

Did it! Done it! This is awesome! It's nice to have some directions you wouldn’t have come up with yourself in the first place. It opens up new opportunities in your creative journey while making decisions.

[avatar]

@ally_nicole I did three short words followed by three long words then three short again to give a nod to SOS: Save our ship. Mine is ā€œAre You Hereā€. https://write.fawm.org/songs/309067

[avatar]

@darcistrutt oh ok, that's a nice idea! Ty :)

this track is a semi-industrial take on a beautiful ambient piece called "ancient noise" from Resident Evil 5. various samples from RE1 and RE2 are used for a simple click track and ambient SFX. a morse code message - "this ancient noise" - is used to trigger a random selection of finger-struck snares. i managed to cut the volume fade guitars near the outro in 27 takes - i'm getting faster, LOL

Holy cow what a fun challenge! My approach was probably similar to a lot of folks here; translate a phrase into Morse code and somehow incorporate that into a song.

The synth part of my song is Morse code for "I Hope You Know What Your Doing", and honestly, that was the easiest part of the song. Once the synth informed me of what kind of song it wanted to be, I knew the bulk of the work was going to be lyrics, and it was! I'm quite happy with it though and had a BLAST writing this one! Great challenge!

@phonopath

I had a very childish response to this challenge and looked for an online morse code generator (https://morsecode.world/international/translator.htm) and immediately started looking at the rhythms of various 4 letter words... but somehow I think I managed to make a beautiful meditative piece out this.

Well, after getting distracted initially and deciding to write a song only using 4 letter words (Dawn Time Raid) although non of them are NSFW. So thank you for the inspiration for a 2nd song that doesn't fit the challenge but I think that idea coming from an idea is a very useful part of this whole experience so far.

I tried for a while to encode a message in a drum track while keeping the correct timings (1 unit for dit, 3 for dah, 1 unit between tones, 3 units of space between letters, 7 between words) but couldn’t make it work in any musical way I liked. Clearly I should have listened to more prog rock 😜

I did manage to have it sung as the bridge though, and I’m quite pleased with the song in the end! https://write.fawm.org/songs/309206

Took me a while to figure out where I was going with this. There are a few little messages within the lyrics as well as the main morse code generated one. If you can make the link of how they relate??? https://write.fawm.org/songs/309736

[avatar]

I went ahead and combined this with the #CommentsFirst game, and I even tossed in a second hidden message in the percussion.

@zu_blus

THIS WAS SO FUN I didn't know I could do it, my idea was to use morse code as base rythym and melody on top https://write.fawm.org/songs/311504

@dannen

I combined the Testing skirmish with the Morse Code Challenge ... https://write.fawm.org/songs/311875

@povosos

I wrote this song, that answered to both Public domain and this challenge: https://write.fawm.org/songs/317588 Unfortunately, you can't put it officially to both challenges, so I post it here. To be honest, the morse code part is quite well hidden, so lets see if anybody has the determination to find it.
