Learning a bit too late that yesterday was International Ukulele Day, and despite not being good at the Uke, I DO own one. So here is my 2nd FAWM track, a little more upbeat and hopeful, but no less melancholic.

Thinking about myths and folklore, you always get the feeling that people are way too quick to sell their souls with the devil for pithy, petty reasons, and not thinking of the consequences. As an overthinker, there's no way I'd lose a part of myself just to play a gee-tar better. I mean I would love to play the guitar...but like...I want to be able to live with myself?

Anyways, this track is a bit lighter, about moving on and dealing with the hand we're dealt. Thanks for listening

Lyrics

Verse 1: Gather round by the fire, Where revelry breathes On the outside,

With or without The need to know Where you belong.

Stay the course When the Hookman Bleeds you bone dry With a dull knife,

And the Hag in the pines Puts a hex on your life, Which won't be long.

Pre-Chorus 1: Hey now,

Even on my back, I'm beggin', "Leave me to the leaves and fallen snow", And if I never learn, I'll never know.

Chorus: If this was a Folktale, I'd run to the Crossroads For the

Man in the suit, And the tie, With the horns And the forked tail.

What I'd give For an easy way out, But it's a long way down,

Before my flaws and imperfections, Doubts and inhibitions, Convince me to believe That I need a superstition

Now Just to face All the loss I found.

If this was a Folktale.

Verse 2: I'll be swallowed by the cold, As Nature surely sheds All Her colors,

And I claw and I crawl To feel that warm Camaraderie.

Jamais vu, like a wraith, I'll be haunted by the haze Of the summer,

Where the Skinwalker sleeps, And the shapes in the trees, Are buried Under The Wildflowers With me.

Pre-Chorus 2: Fade out.

This way to the egress, darling, After all this façade can't last for long. But if I never know, I will never be wrong.

If this was a Folktale, I'd run to the Crossroads For the

Man in the suit, And the tie, With the horns And the forked tail.

What I'd give For an easy way out, But it's a long way down,

Before my flaws and imperfections, Doubts and inhibitions, Convince me to believe That I need a superstition

Now Just to face All the loss I found.

Bridge: If this was a Folktale

I would learn how to right my wrongs, I would write her a perfect love song, Take the pieces of our hearts And tie 'em all up in a pretty bow.

If this was a Folktale,

There'd be a story that starts, and then it ends, There'd be a moral and a purpose and a bookend, To remind us of the place where we came from On Memory Ln.

If this was a Folktale,

I would hammer all the nails With the same aplomb And the same four chords, Over and over and over and over again.

Now Just to face All the loss I found.

but our lives are folktales, and we are all manifestations of some myth or combination of myths. superstitions are simply beliefs in things that exist in another realm of which we can have no provable knowledge. but like the furies, they follow us everywhere. i love the weaving of the melodies throughout the song,

@cathreu I wrote one song this year directly inspired by Claudio, if you were to check any other tracks out I'd point you there. It's pretty emotionally heavy, but it comes from me and my late friend being obsessed with "The Light & The Glass" back in high school. Always nice to see another Coheed fan in the wild :)

Thank you again for the kind words

@cathreu

Oh, Claudio is one of my personal heroes as well! I occasionally can spot my influences in my own music, but it is always unconscious during the writing, they just sneak in there.

I'll be back for more listening once I make it through the tit4tat list! You're music really takes me back to my youth, haha

@cathreu You don't even know how complimented I am to have reminded you of Claudio. The guy is my idol, though I never thought my music or voice sounded anything like Coheed. Listening back, the bridge of Folktale has similarities to the melodies in the bridge of The Suffering, so here I am, cribbing from the best. Funny how inspiration works, lol. Thanks so much for the listen and the kind words, it means a lot!

@cathreu

Great pop sensibilities here- very catchy. That ukulele's gritty tone does it for me and works well with your voice and added instrumentation. Your vocals span from conor oberst to the folk rock era. You're melodies here remind me of something Claudio Sanchez would write. I'm confused in the best way. Good stuff, especially the layering. #tit4tat

You have such a great way with words: "Where revelry breathes/ On the outside," and "Bleeds you bone dry/ With a dull knife," among many bother phrases. Love how the chorus lands -- it's excellent and I'm going to be singing it all day.

@opossum

Your vocals are Magic! I'd sell my soul for a voice like yours...er...wait, no I wouldn't (have I not learned anything from this beautiful song?) Such a terrific song with EVERYTHING! Luscious vocals, perfect instrumentation, stellar production, clever lyrics! I mean, come on, this song is so Damn Good, you DID sell your soul didn't you? Well, didn't you? This is truly awesome! #tit4tat

Had to come comment again. I love this track. Listened to it again. So good!

Man I love your voice. Now that FAWM's done I'm gonna start my listening with your album. I'll do it by your numbered order. Already listened to the first track so starting here. What a great song! "If this was a folktale" rings in my head. Great job!

@micklove

Humble and charming. Great vocal delivery. Catchy good-feeling melodies and lyrics. Very palatable.

@faders

The lyrics and the melody in this works so well together. Taylor Swift's Folk album is missing this song. Amazingly well written, and your vocal performance is stellar!

@doug52

I love this. What a great hook and story. Great Job! 😀

@gordon

A real head nodder, or is it a side to side swayer? Really catchy in any event. Just lovely stuff. Really enjoyed this

@kembole

Great track. My fav thing with new fawmers is to try to guess the starting line up of instruments and after that I try guess how they sound like. I had to go through hours and hours of stock music for work and I F***NG HATE UKULELE. (I hope you get it why.) So it was a really bad start for me. But after you started singing, a sigh of relief. So good, just adore your voice! The falsetto was a nice surprise too! Great lyrics and composition. Will come back for this. I still might skip the uke-intro ;)

[avatar]

I am now your super-fan. There was something interesting hiding around every corner of this folktale. The vocals were incredible.

[avatar]

The percussion is right on. You do a good job with the Uke and the production is very contemporary. Thanks for sharing.

@lemoan

10 seconds into the song and I'm already invested, I absolutely LOVE the percussion and how well it goes with the ukulele. Not to mention the vocal delivery and how it's mixed, it goes so well with the instrumental itself! The bridge is also so well written, not a single stale moment in this song, I'll definitely be replaying this for weeks!! Incredible job! 👏

@cowex

I really dig the vocal delivery on this. Feels smooth and sincere.

@debs

Oh man, I LOVE this mix. I'm listening in headphones and your panning choices are so perfect especially those harmonies. And now there's piano in it. This build just keeps getting better and better. Holy shit. This is amazing. Yes, I'm writing this comment as I'm listening. The Random Song generator brought me here. It did good. 😍

[avatar]

I love the way the lyrics flow from one thought to another over the music phrases. The chorus is so good! Wow. And your vocals have just the right edgy quality. Beautiful performance and mix as well!

@hyssop

Love this!!! The harmonies are so good, and all the layers of instrumentation weave together so beautifully. How you restructured traditional folk superstitions in the lyrics & stitched them together is creative & refreshing! (Also love the Melody Ln reference!!!). Hard hitting as always, though admittedly more euphoric (a sad euphoria, it soars but it's sad? beautiful!)

[avatar]

Damn! You smashed this one out of the park! So addictive melodically and love all the interchange with the vocals and the harmonies. Great effort.

[avatar]

Ooh, this is achingly lovely. Beautiful phrasing and octaved vocal lines. The ukes work very well with the piano and percussiony stuff. Obvious to say it sounds a little like Bon Iver but in my book that’s definitely a good thing.

‘The same four chords’ over and over again and again idea is cool. I also liked all the folky imagery you worked into the narrative.

Excellent. I will add you to my watchlist.

[avatar]

This gives STRONG Bon Iver and I can't love it hard enough. Everything works so well. The emotional arc of this is absolutely perfect. Seriously great job! This feels complete to me.

[avatar]

A cacophony of Ukes! Wonderful layers on the music and the vocals really creates a full sound. Loving where the lyrics took my mind whilst listening. Particularly “ I would hammer all the nails With the same aplomb And the same four chords, Over and over and over and over again.” Very nice - great I stumbled on you via ‘Random song’

Wow, fantastic. Loved it from the beginning to the end. So much to explore and enjoy here. Your instrumentation, voice, melodies, and overall production really made me feel happy. That story that you weaved was just wonderful. This is what I love about FAWM, discovering music I didn’t know I needed, but am so joyful that it came into my life.
