Friend (Special)

Liner Notes
Oh wow, this sounds 𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦. Definitely one of the worst things I've ever recorded. The guitalele is awful, the percussion does nothing and my voice sounds like a hideous rasp. I suppose I had a melody in my head, but I have neither the talent nor the range to pull it off.
In my defence, I'm working with very little audio equipment. I can't find any of my microphones or speakers and my mum bought me a headset, so I guess that's what I'm using. It's no excuse for how 𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦 this track is, though.
Lyrically it's about a dear friend who wrote a song about me a couple of FAWMs back. After hearing this he may well not wish to be my friend any more. I probably wouldn't.
Lyrics
I've been beaten and pushed around for my whole life Those rich guys sneered at me for being such a one But there's one dude who doesn't Who's he? My friend.
I'm really all kinds of awkward Sorta troublesome to defend It must be really difficult To be my friend...
But he's been hanging around for quite some time To fix up my songs (those so make-do-and-mend) Despite our sounds being melted, He stays my friend.
With music for Magikarp And sandwiches with two-cheese blend With power derived from arse gas He is my friend...
So I'm relieved to have him on my side Wherever (Kent, or Tokyo, or Bangor, Germany, or Southend) And every time I see him I'll hug my friend.
We're happy to lift some weights And post up these things we've penned Like Hedex, or Laura Close, or Coffee? My special friend!
Comments
While you're quite apologetic about the sound in your liner notes, I assure you that the lo-fi sound contributes a lot to the feel of this. It sounds raw, genuine and timeless.
I thought from the title it was going to be another type of friend! Everyone deserves a friend- I think the aim is to find your tribe of people who get you. Also doing lofi music but maube I'll have figured it out by the end of this! Lovely groove going on this and ai can hear what you mean I think.
The guitalele sounds alright to me and the voice ain't too bad either, you know. Run it through a compressor, tag it #gramophone and get to the next song! Lyrically it's sweet, a little self-deprecating, very kind. You all over. I recognise and appreciate every reference to our prior songs / adventures. I was tempted to be an arsehole in the comments here for old-times sake but somehow through the love and the tears I can't bring myself to do it. You've put up with me way more than I've put up with you after all. 😉
Never change. As if you would. ❤️
Good to hear you again. The song sounds good, the recording not so much, it's like I'm listening to a 30s blues song on some crackly old vinyl. Actually that might work to save it - run it through Izotype Vinyl or something like that. Embrace the outside recording. Anyway I like the words, (what will Morti think?) the harmonies are sweet, and the vibe is very strong. Like it! j$
The production of this fits great with the lyrics and carries the vibe in a way that more polish would have never accomplished. This was super fun to listen to.
