The Weight of the World (A Little Lullaby)

It's been a bit stressful at the old homestead lately, as a public school teacher married to a federal employee. I wasn't going to write anything tonight, but when I went into the studio to put stickers on the cello neck to improve my intonation, there was the ukulele, an ambulance screamed past my window and then this tune tumbled out.

The "weight of the world" thing felt pretty tired to me until I looked up the actual weight of the earth and discovered that it fit really nicely into the B-section. So you just never know.

Lyrics

A little lullaby Babe you haven’t slept in days Put it away The sirens outside are crying Like they always do But not for you

A little lullaby Not all troubles are yours to keep Just go to sleep It’s dark outside But the sun will rise And when you see it With your very own eyes It might lighten your load, and then You’ll smile again

13 thousand 170 billion trillion pounds That’s a lot of weight Probably ought to put it down

A little lullaby In your dreams you’re light as a cloud Flying over the crowd Your fists unfurl You’re just a girl Who’s been unburdened By the weight of the world You’ll wake up, and then You’ll smile again

Such a sweet song and a great reminder to set down the burdens that aren't ours. - Natalie

Man, this is just perfect. I could listen to it on repeat for ages. Easily the best take on the "weight of the world" phrase I've ever heard.

Heartbreakingly beautiful. Your voice and melody and sentiment, they hurt in the best way.

Thank you for this little glimpse into your life. It's really beautiful to hear your truth with your uke and voice.

Simply stunning. Heart stopping! Love the bridge too.

Absolutely amazing changes in this one. That G#dim to Amin is so tasty! At least that's what I think those chords are. They got those notes when I play it on a keyboard. Melody is so killer as well. This is one of those songs that when I hear it I immediately attempt to transcribe and learn it.

I hope this song becomes a classic. Whether or not it does, I'll always cherish this moment, the first time that I heard it and read the words.

So charming. Love love your voice. That bridge is excellent, not sure if it's the weight of the earth or the sun but either way, too much to carry. Beautiful job, I love a good lullaby

Lovely work as always; a sleepy song in all the right ways and yeah, better to put that weight down.

This made me well up. What a gift to have permission to put it down sometimes. Thanks for an amazing tune.

This is pure gold. Your vocals are so good here. And you are right. 'Probably ought to put it down'. I love this song.

I don’t think there could ever be enough lullabies in the world, this one is such a perfect encapsulation of how therapeutic a piece of music can be. I love the way you’ve used an abbreviated verse as an intro, very clever, and then put your own wry spin on the weight of the world. Melodically gorgeous throughout. I hope writing it was cathartic in some way :)

Carley this is ace. So much emotion in that vocal take and the gentle uke give everything. The vocal melody is so sweet. Love it!

So gorgeous! The perfect lullaby - may lull me back to sleep once I finish a song...

Lovely singing and your voice has a pure, powerful-yet-fragile quality. Sweet 'n memorable melody. The stripped-down mix is perfect for the song and I really like the way the nested rhymes roll along with the flow of the song. Love it.
